Historical Lookback – Football Pioneers, Mary Lyons Palmers Jarrow

Historical Lookback – Football Pioneers Often when we look through history the pioneers of certain aspects of our daily life that we take for granted were fought for and built by men. While there is no denying the truth of men shaping history, what we read often neglects to mention the role that women have played in those events. Indeed, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that my Great, great, great, great Grandmother Suzanna not only served in the British Army during the 1850’s but also was present in the field during the Crimean War and miraculously gave birth to a daughter Harriet Alma in 1855 who they named after the famous battle of the year before. When it comes to football however, I came across a story about a Jarrow lass who not only played for England but also scored and became the youngest ever goal scorer for her country, a record that still stands today and covers both the men’s and women’s teams. The Palmer’s Munitionettes were a Women’s team formed from the temp...

Match Preview - Newcastle Blue Star v Jarrow Saturday 3rd July 2021

Image
Match Preview - Newcastle Blue Star   Our first preseason friendly of the 2021/22 season see us move away from the usual higher division opponents by facing Northern Alliance (one tier below) super power Newcastle Blue Star. Formed in 1930 the Aristocrats are no stranger to higher league opposition with themselves having been flying high in the Northern Premier league only 12 years ago. Financial problems saw the club fold in 2009 but thankfully re-emerge in 2018 when they set up home in the Scotswood road side of the city and have grown remarkably in those few years. Ground developments and player investment has led to increased attendances and unrivalled ambition. As with all teams throughout this past 16 months Blue Stars progress has been severely hindered due to the Covid outbreak with their form of last season not reaching the level that many expected, something they will be looking put right this term. Blue star themselves boast a decorated and successful history hav...

Durham FA Under 18’s Sunday Cup Final Washington NSG U18’s 4-3 Seaham Red Star FC U17’s 20/05/2021 – 7pm Kick Off   15, 65 Alison,  40  Mitchell,  92  Charlton  |  25  Tasker, 50 Shi, 75 Demeril   A wet and windy Thursday evening saw Perth Green welcome two youth sides from Washington & Seaham respectively as they competed for the Durham FA Under 18’s Sunday Cup. Seaham were attempting to win the trophy for the second time having previously been crowned champions back in 2003 with Washington aiming to take the honour for the first time since their inception only 8 years previously having been founded in 2013. The game started quickly and Washington playing in Red Shirts and black shorts were able to press high up the pitch thanks in part to the weather with rain lashing down on the surface and a strong wind forcing Seaham, playing in blue, back into their own half. It was indeed the wind that helped give the NSG U...

Jarrow FC 1-3 Billingham Synthonia (21-04-2021)

FA Durham Challenge Cup 3rd Round    21-04-2021   Jarrow FC 1-3 Billingham Synthonia   25’ North | 1’, 6’ Howes, 16’ Ferguson   For the second time in 8 days a side from Billingham took to the field at Perth Green in Jarrow for a Durham cup match. This time however the visitors were victorious dumping the home side out of the competition and ultimately ending the Marchers season. It couldn’t have started any worse for Jarrow with a first minute corner being swung over and after a few players rose for the ball the referee blew his whistle for a handball and penalty that looked extremely harsh in real time and more so after watching the replay. The resulting pen was dispatched however and made the score line 1-0 to the Synners. Jarrow didn’t allow their heads to drop and went in search of an immediate response but a mixture of good defending and poor execution of the final ball contrived to keep them at bay. The second goal if not conten...

Jarrow FC (P) 2-2 Billingham Town (15-04-2021)

FA Durham Challenge Cup 2nd Round  15-04-2021 Jarrow FC (P) 2-2 Billingham Town 55’, 60’ Cal Smith | 82’, 90’ Bruton (Frazer sent off 53’) On a night with clear skies and a golden sun it was the home side who prevailed in yet another set of penalties that ultimately settled this entertaining Durham Cup game. The early exchanges between the two sides were fairly innocuous and it remained that way for most of the first half. Billingham Town in fact controlling most of the ball without really threatening Steve Hubery’s goal. While Billingham tried to play through midfield to the forwards Jarrow’s lack of possession led them to be more direct in their approach and the main target was Channon North who won his fair share of headers and held the ball up well looking for team mates in the process.  Fortunately for Jarrow on this occasion the referee was in no mood for what he saw as infringements and any sloppy play from the visitors was at times harshly punished and gave the home si...

Sunderland RCA 0 - 0 Jarrow FC (06/04/2021) Friendly

Northern League Friendly 06/04/2021 – 7pm Kick Off Sunderland RCA 0 - 0 Jarrow FC Tuesday night saw the resumption of Northern League football post national lockdown part 2 as Jarrow featuring 2 trialists and new face Andy Bowie visited Division 1 outfit Sunderland RCA in a behind closed doors friendly. In a game of very few clear cut chances it was the away side who started the brighter by trying to take advantage of both sides obvious lockdown hangover as Channon North latched on to the ball before firing wide. Almost instantly after that chance the game settled into the pattern that would see out the remainder of the first half. Jarrow sat deep and pressed hard and quickly when the opportunity arose as RCA began trying to get their passing game going through lots of possession. Indeed within a few minutes RCA had created two chances. The first of those being a snap shot that ended up going wide and the second was where they managed to force a sharp save from Keeper Ja...

Jarrow FC 7-2 Gateshead (16-12-2020) FA Durham Challenge Cup 1st Round

FA Durham Challenge Cup 1 st Round 16-12-2020 Jarrow FC 7-2 Gateshead   49’ 50’ 74’ Lennox, 57’ Mellish, 69’ Allen (Pen), 80’ Shaw, 88’ Murray | 7’ Thomas, 32’ Carson                                                  In a game that looked massively in doubt a few hours prior Jarrow came from behind to beat a youthful Gateshead side. Non stop rain had fell on South Tyneside for almost 24 hours yet the pitch staff at Perth Green managed to prepare a surface that was in better shape than that of the Premier League encounter at Ellend road in Leeds on the same night. It was Gateshead who drew first blood in a first half littered with chances for both sides. Eddie Thomas latched onto a through ball and slotted home past Hubery in the Jarrow goal to make it 1-0 to the visitors. The early goal helped to settle the visitors into a rhythm and with...
