Hebburn Town 4-1 Jarrow FC
32’ (P) Armstrong, 40’ Spence, 46’ Taylor, 47’ Scott | 65’ Lennox
In what proved to the be the first match since the country was locked down
in March to have supporters through the gate, those supporters were treat to a
very entertaining game. To start with Jarrow changed their system and employed
a 451 formation with Adam Lennox up front.
Initially Jarrow kept possession well and moved forward when they could.
When they did get forward however they were thwarted by Hebburn’s defence or at
times the keeper who read the game really well.
After the early stages of both teams having plenty of the ball Hebburn began
to assert their dominance and they started press Jarrow into playing deeper
thus isolating their lone striker. Hebburn grew stronger as the half went on
and had a number of efforts on goal that eventually led to prolific striker
Armstrong contentiously being brought down by Daryl Donnelly and the ref gave
the pen. The pen was dispatched by Armstrong on 32 minutes and before half time
there was still time for more pressure and a number of strikes at the Jarrow
goal that in the main Jak Wells did brilliantly to stop. For all of Jak Wells
great saves however there was an in-swinging corner from the right-hand side
that was brilliantly headed into the Jarrow net by Spence who out jumped the
Jarrow defence.
Into the second half now and Jarrow reverted back to a more familiar 442
formation with Liam Mcbryde partnering Lennox up front. Hebburn continued to
dominate the game however and scored two goals straight after the ref blew for
the restart. 4-0 down and with a mountain to climb Jarrow kept trying to play
nice football. A feature of pre-season has been there resilience when behind to
not hide and the ability to keep trying to play the way Dave Bell wants them to
play.
This style and philosophy finally paid off in the 65th minute as
Jarrow scored a great team goal. There were 8 passes in total that included keep
Jak Wells who played his part in the build-up as Jarrow played out from the
back and through the midfield with Josh Elcoate and Kris Allen exchanging
passes before Mcbryde laid a ball back to Allen who played a straight through
ball for Adam Lennox who was being played on by the left full back, and as
Lennox approached the keeper the in form forward dragged the ball to his left
and rounding the keeper passed the ball into the back of the empty Hebburn net.
Great reward the endeavour and patience that they had shown.
Jarrow lost both centre halves in the 2nd half with Donnelly
leaving the field at half time but with Nick Little covering in that position they
managed to end Hebburn’s scoring. Hebburn continue to press however but with Ross
Toward now at right full back Jarrow were able to retain possession better and
look for the hold up play of Liam Mcbryde and the through balls of Kris Allen
& Josh Elcoate with Lennox providing the running for balls in behind or
over the top.
With the introduction of Phil Gray at left back Josh Elcoate and Kris Allen
linked well with him after an inside ball to him was then dinked left footed to
the back post where Liam McBryde flashed a header just wide.
A much-improved Jarrow saw out the second half with a few more half chances
including a last-ditch clearance by a Hebburn defender from low cross that he
had to turn over his own bar. Lennox then header the corner just wide. Once again,
the score line wont please Dave Bell but the performance against one of the
best sides in the Division above will no doubt give him lots of confidence
going forward.
