Historical Look back – 1898-99 Season
We start our Historical look back series with a season to remember as we delve into
one of the most exciting years in Jarrow history.
In 1899 Jarrow were plying their trade In the Northern
Alliance league with the likes of South Shields and Academy sides from both
Newcastle United & Sunderland both whom had main teams in the English First
Division (the Premier League of the day).
It was Jarrow’s fifth consecutive year in the Northern
Alliance and they were aiming to get their highest ever league position having
finished runners up to Newcastle United A the season before in 1898. The
winning margin for Newcastle that year was by 10 clear points so Jarrow knew
they had tighten up and turn the 6 defeats they had suffered into wins or draws
if they stood a chance of lifting the trophy.
Remarkably Jarrow managed to match Newcastle’s goal tally
from the previous season scoring 73 goals and only conceding one more than the current
champions with 24 goals conceded. Jarrow won the league by 4 points having
converted 3 of those defeats into victories.
With only two points for a win their tally of 42 was enough to win them
there one and only Northern Alliance league win.
The great achievement of winning the league was overshadowed
however by their involvement in the FA Cup.
Jarrow progressed through the preliminary round by beating local
rivals Hebburn after a 0-0 draw saw the Jarrow side win the replay 2-1.
The reward for beating their local was a trip to Merseyside giants
Everton and a crowd of 3000 saw the Toffees prevail against a gallant Jarrow
who managed to score through Mcdonald but it wasn’t enough as Everton won 3-1. Everton
finished 4th in Division 1 that season so it was great achievement
and experience to play at Goodison park.
The following is the final league table taken from the
