Jarrow’s 2nd friendly of the season saw the Tynesider’s entertain Northern League Division One Whitley Bay at Perth Green on Saturday afternoon.

The game with a great intensity as Jarrow attempted to get the ball into the box from Nick Little cross Whitley Bay countered and as Shanks carried the ball down the left wing Jarrow players stood off him and his first time shot having cut back in flew past Jak Wells into the top corner of the net.

Despite the early set back Jarrow continued to look to keep good possession but each attack was thwarted by some defensive work and a high press from the visitors that showed their quality without the ball. Whitley continued to threaten the Jarrow goal every time Jarrow lost the ball as the pace didn’t look like dropping.

It wasn’t until the 12th minute when Jarrow finally got an effort on target as Kai Elliot’s cross shot was well saved to Whitley Bays keepers left.

Then in the 18th minute great play between Josh Elcoate & Kai Elliot after a quickly taken free kick from Lee Kerr led to Liam Mcbryde squeezing a shot away that the keeper saved comfortably. Then just two minutes later a long Whitley Bay free kick caused problems at Jarrow’s back post but a combination of Jordon Mellish and Jak Well managed to see off the danger.

22nd minute saw Jarrow’s best moment of the game so far with another good ball from Nick Little down the right wing that Max Kirkham was able to shield from the defender and managed to turn and play the ball inside towards the advancing Josh Elcoate who hit a left foot dipping shot that rattled the cross bar and bounced clear. The resulting corner was then easily caught by the Keeper.

32nd minute then saw a towering defensive header from Captain Jordon Mellish that led to some good passing between Nick Little & Davey Smith before a right footed shot from Kris Allen went over the bar, it dipped but too late.

Whitley Bay continued to be busy on the counter and a few through balls were either dealt with by Daryl Donelly and Mellish or the outrushing Jak Wells in goal.

34th minute now and Davey Smith managed to get a shot away from the corner of the box that Whitley Bay’s keeper had to stop by diving to his right and managed to push it away for a corner to Jarrow.

41st minute then saw a badly timed challenge on Jarrow full back Nick Little that led to the lively fullback having to leave the field and was unable to put any weight on his ankle.

Into the second half and Whitley Bay doubled their lead with a low shot into the corner of the net that looked to be an own goal.

After making around 4 changes at half time Jarrow looked sluggish and struggled to find their rhythm in the second half.

Into the 58th minute and Whitley Bay still pressed the Jarrow goal for what would be a third & killer goal and they had a passing shot just go wide of the Jarrow goal. Whitley Bay had another effort two minutes later that went just over the bar and they finally made it 3-0 a further two minutes after that. Jarrow hadn’t managed to find any sort of impetus in their attacking play and struggled to cope with Whitley Bay’s pressure. In the 66th minute Whitley Bay scored another to make it their second half dominance show.

The 4th goal seemed to spark Jarrow back into action and substitute Adam Lennox came on up front. Lee Ker slid in and dispossessed the Whitley midfielder and slid in Lennox who skipped past his defender only to be tripped as he ran towards goal. Lennox then coolly placed the ball right into the left corner of the goal from the resulting penalty.

In the 83rd minute Lennox was again played in and raced clear of the defence. This time with only the goalkeeper to beat he lifted the ball over the advancing keeper and the ball found its way in the bottom corner of the net.

In the 89th minute Lennox had the chance to complete a substitute hattrick but his header crashed into the cross bar and Whitley Bay cleared their lines and managed to complete the scoring by grabbing their fifth of the afternoon with a neat close-range finish.

Another excellent run out against a top side and Jarrow players fitness and sharpness is improving with every game.
