On a day that had started with bright sunshine and 25-degree heat by
mid-afternoon the weather for the match was in stark contrast for the worse. By
kick off the clouds had gathered and there was a darkness that suggested
imminent rain. Thankfully that promised rain held off until the second half and
after a really good open first few minutes Jarrow saw an Adam Lennox chip over
the keeper chalked off for offside after just 7 minutes.
There was further nice football from the home that resulted in Kris Allen’s
through ball after nice play from Kai Elliot being flashed wide by the inform Lennox.
For all Jarrow’s possession in the first 10 minutes South Shields U19’s kept
trying their play own brand of stylish passing football and after a neat
passage of play they finally broke the deadlock after a low cross from the left
was turned in expertly into the bottom right hand corner of the Jarrow net by
Declan Blissett.
The game then became scrappy for a few minutes as Jarrow tried to respond. The
lively Adam Lennox running onto a through ball and after touching it to his
right was brought down in the area. Kris Allen stepped up and coolly converted
the pen with a low shot to the keepers right.
It was the Shields youngsters however who finished the half the brightest
firstly with a shot just wide of the post from their number 7. That effort was
followed up in the 43rd minute with powerful effort that just rose and went
over the bar.
Into the second half and Jarrow began to make their experience tell. A
through ball broke the offside trap and was expertly finished by Glen Hargrave
with a delicate 25-yard chip to put Jarrow 2-1 up. It could’ve been 3 a minute
later but a nice curling cross from Ross Toward and header from Hargrave was
well saved by Shields keeper.
Jarrow continued to press and two shots in as many minutes from Adam Lennox
& Josh Elcoate tested the Shields defence.
Finally, in the 70th minute Jarrow got their reward against a tired looking
Shields youth. A corner from the left swung in and over the 6-yard box to the
back post where Daryl Donnelly was waiting to nod the ball home. The ball was
valiantly cleared but the linesman signalled for the goal, no need for goal
line technology this time.
As the game drew to a close Shields Academy once again started to play their
neat and tidy football and a good move saw a neat left foot finish in the
Jarrow near post by Oscar Taylor to make it 3-2.
There was still time however for Adam Lennox to score his 3rd goal in 2
games with a close-range finish from a long free kick into the box.
Another thoroughly enjoyable game at Perth Green where both sides played
some very good football despite the increasingly difficult second half
conditions.
