Tuesday night once again saw Jarrow pit their wits against a Division One
side and after all the rain that we had during the day it was a miracle that
the pitch was even playable but thanks to the home side by kick off time it was
ready and looking good for an entertaining game.
If Jarrow had been guilty of starting slowly in their previous friendlies
against division one teams then tonight, they would break that mould. In the 4th
minute a perfect in swinging corner from Josh Elcoate was glanced towards the
back post by the precise movement of Max Kirkham and the ball found its way
into the back of the net. Kirkham playing a more advanced role tonight and
thriving on it.
Jarrow were able to knock the ball around easier than Saturday and thanks to
a fairly high press stopped much of what Seaham were trying to do when they had
the ball until some good football from the hosts undone the Jarrow defence only
for the Seaham forward to lift the ball over Jak Wells and just wide of the
left hand post with 15 minutes gone.
Kirkham was causing Seaham’s defence problems at the other end and managed a
cut back from the left that Glen Hargrave could only prod wide.
A few minutes later and it was Jarrow on the attack again as Lennox forced
the Seaham keeper into a smart save low to his right and gathered the ball.
On 24 minutes Jarrow’s hard work was undone again as the Seaham forward
turned in the box there was a coming together where Daryll Donnelly appeared to
foul his man and the ref awarded the spot kick which was duly converted by
Johnson sending Wells the wrong way.
Undeterred Jarrow kept on pressing and Adam Lennox continuing to make a
nuisance of himself turned sharply in the box before his left footed shot went
wide.
Then on 34 minutes Lennox turned provider cutting back inside onto his right
foot before delivering a cross onto the head of Liam Mcbryde who saw his looping
header go just over the Seaham cross bar.
A minute later and it was Jak Wells turn to palm a Seaham effort round the
post. The subsequent corner was met powerfully by the Seaham player and his
header flashed wide of the Jarrow goal.
On 38 minutes Max Kikham found himself in Space in the right-hand corner of
the box and could only manage to curl a left footed shot just round the post.
Once again however Jarrow conceded after some nice football from Seaham. Jak
Wells once again made the initial save but the rebound was followed up and
knocked in. Seaham took a 2-1 lead into half time.
Into the second half again Liam Mcbryde missed two half chances to get
Jarrow back level.
A few minutes later however Jak Wells was on hand to deny Seaham a 3rd
as Jarrow kept on pressing, they were susceptible to the counter attack. 2
minutes later and Jarrow thought they had equalised though after a whipped
cross from the right by Hargrave was met by the head of Lennox and somehow the
ball bounced down in front of the goal and over the bar.
Soon after that and the right wing back Hargrave powerfully drove a shot
against the near post from 20 yards. Not to be denied for long Hargrave was
moved into the attack alongside Lennox and found himself to the left of goal
where his first shot was well blocked only for Hargrave to follow up and tuck
the ball home. 2-2 and a deserved equaliser for the away side.
2 minutes after being switched to striker Hargrave found himself in space on
the right this time and with plenty to do fired a low shot across the keeper
that nestled in the bottom left hand corner of the net. 3-2 to Jarrow with 2
goals in as many minutes after an hour gone.
Any thing Jarrow could do Seaham could also do and with 2 right sided crosses,
one a free kick and one from open play Seaham smashed two bullet headers past Wells
in the Jarrow goal. 4-3 to Seaham and the game was fractious and very much end
to end.
78 minutes gone and Jarrow once again found themselves behind but were determined
to keep playing their football and despite conceding those goals had enjoyed a
lot more possession in their 352 formation. Kris Allen and Kai Elliot combined
really well down the left before the latter squared a ball to the former who
could only shoot just wide resulting in a corner. From the corner Kris Allen again
managed to get his shot away but to no avail.
Then on 83 minutes Adam Lennox grabbed his 5th goal in 4 games as
he chased a high ball down the right before volleying the ball over the
advancing Seaham keeper.
With the score poised at 4-4 Ross Toward saw the keeper off his line and
tried his luck from just inside the Seaham half but his shot went narrowly
wide.
There was still time for late drama however as Seaham managed to score a 5th
and winning goal with the last kick of the game. Jarrow switched off and
allowed the forward to be found in space and he coolly tucked the ball away.
Pulsating game with some very good football and brilliant goals. At times
the defenders couldn’t do anything about the goals they were just moments of
individual brilliance or brilliant team work.
