The game between Easington Colliery
and Jarrow on a mild late summer’s night started with a frenetic pace and Josh
Houghton almost made it one nil to the visitors inside the first minute of the
game with shot just wide of the post.
In this end to end encounter however
Easington had a great chance of their own just minutes later as Middleton
headed just wide of Jarrow’s goal.
Into the 7th minute and a mix up
allowed Levi Collins to nip in and round the keeper before coolly slotting home
a goal in his first start of the season for Jarrow.
The frenetic pace didn’t let up with
a goal being scored and indeed Easington had the next chance soon after as
Watson fired a shot just over the bar.
It was Easington again who made the
running a few minutes later and somehow a side foot shot was hacked away by Jarrow
with the goal gaping and the keeper off his line.
Then on 21 minutes a deep free was
sent into the box by Lee Kerr who managed to find the head of Darryll Donnelly
but it went just wide.
The equalising goal came from some
sloppy play from the Jarrow midfield before a nice cross from the right was
acrobatically volleyed towards goal by Middleton. Huberry in goal managed to
get a hand to it but the ball still somehow found the net via the post.
Almost an instant reply from Jarrow however
saw Easington’s keeper save comfortably from a Glen Hargrove effort.
Levi Collins then hit a left foot
cross/shot that was dipping towards goal but the keeper again dealt with it and
managed to palm it away to safety.
With a few minutes to go before half
time both teams’ right backs had efforts on goal. Easington’s advanced down the
right wing before cutting inside and shooting just over. Alex Bone for Jarrow
then could only repeat the feet by firing over from an acute angle after some
neat skills and nice footwork in the middle of the park from Josh Houghton and his
deflected shot fell into the path of
Bone.
The second half started slower than
the first but didn’t lack the chances as Easington fired over early in the half
and Josh Elcoate had a left foot shot well saved after some nice build up play
through the middle of the pitch.
A few half chances then fell the way
of Easington as the home team were starting to assert themselves as the
dominant side. Indeed, a free kick from the right touch line was curled just
round the opposite post.
Into the 62nd minute and Easington’s
pressure told as a superb left footed shot caught the Jarrow keeper flat footed
and the ball crashed against the cross bar before being followed up by Pounder
who nodded it home to make it 2-1.
It was 3-1 only a few minutes later
as the Jarrow defence was again on the retreat and Adamson found the bottom
right corner with a clever finish for Easington.
Only a minute after the third
Easington goal they rattled the post from outside the box and Jarrow were all
at sea literally at the coastal ground in County Durham in sight of the North
Sea. 9 minutes after the 2nd goal came the 4th as a cross from the left wasn’t
dealt with by the Jarrow defence and Pounder was there to glance in the header
for his 2nd of the game.
The end of the 15 minutes of madness
then produced the final nail in the Blue & White army’s coffin. Still in
good spirits up until this point the travelling fans were left silenced as
Chapman curled a 20-yard free kick into the Jarrow goal past Hubery to make it
5-1. a score line unimaginable at half time had been made true by some
excellent attacking football from the hosts but contributed to by some
defensive mix ups and lack of cover.
Lee Hetherington came on and made an
almost immediate impact drilling a low shot near post that squeezed its way
under the body of the keeper who somehow managed to stop it sneaking over the
line.
It was Hetherington again on 82
minutes who headed just wide after a lovely dinked cross from the left foot of
goal scorer Levi Collins who didn’t stop running all game.
Hetherington was involved again as he
slid a straight ball behind the up until then well drilled Easington defence
and another substitute for Jarrow Ross Toward coolly slotted the ball home by
side footing into the bottom right hand corner.
Jordon Mellish almost made it 3 with
a powerful header that was just tipped over from a corner and that was to be
the away side’s last real chance of the game.
A crazy 15 minutes ultimately cost
Jarrow being able to get anything out of the game but there were plenty of
positives to take from the game with the amount of chances being created.
Easington will rightly feel they were deserved winners as their pace and skill
in attack was evident from the first whistle and I suspect they will finish
higher than last season’s 10th as they look extremely dangerous at home.
