Jarrow FC 0 – 0 West Allotment Celtic (05/09/2020)

Northern League Division 2

05/09/2020 – 3pm Kick Off

Jarrow FC 0 – 0 West Allotment Celtic

The opening day of the Northern League Division 2 season started with last seasons number 1 team travelling to Perth Green in a reverse of the scheduled West Allotment home fixture.

Jarrow Lasses U13’s gave the team a guard of honour as they entered the field which was a nice touch to start the season. The girls having won their game earlier in the day 4-1 with goals from Hope (2), Walton & daughter of ex Jarrow player Chris Macdonald Eva McDonald.

Into the action and the game was always going to be full of good football and a bright start from Jarrow saw an Adam Lennox shot well saved by West’s keeper after a great ball from Josh Elcoate had released Lennox down the right.

From that moment on West started to press Jarrow’s back 5 and pin them in somewhat as the away side enjoyed the vast majority of the possession. On 17 minutes a nice piece of passing play was finished off with a sharp low drive that Jarrow number 1 Jak Wells did well to save before being cleared by Alex Bone back off the attacker for a goal kick.

Despite West’s control of the football and of the game Jarrow were defending really well despite being forced so deep. When Jarrow did get the ball, they generally used it well with example being Adam Lennox who skipped past a midfielder on the Jarrow right after picking up the loose ball from a West corner. He then cut back inside and beat another before moving back outside where he unceremoniously barged off the ball. The resulting in swinging free kick was just inches over the top of Darryll Donnellys head before being claimed by Hodgson in the West goal.

A Liam McBryde effort just wide of the goal was Jarrow’s last real effort of the half as neither side could produce anything of note. The remainder of the first half was littered with half chances but plenty of decent build up play.

Into the second half and no changes from Jarrow yet they started pushing higher up the pitch and managed to win a lot more possession than what they had had in the first half.

52 minutes gone indeed and the great movement of striker Liam McBryde almost opened the scoring with another effort that went just wide of the West goal.

A few more great chances for West Allotment followed that McBryde chance with a shot just wide and a rising effort just over the bar. What the game lacked in terms of goals it was most certainly being made up for in quality. By the hour mark both sides were desperate to break the deadlock and it became even more end to end with attacks flowing A good move by Jarrow was broken up and a long ball forward was thwarted by a last-ditch tackle by left back Phil Gray as West broke forward.

West Allotment who had scored 100 goals in just 28 games last season were still carrying a massive threat as the pace and skill of their front three was evident. On 63 indeed the combined again and yet again Jak Wells did brilliantly to save the effort on goal and keep it 0-0.

The notable thing throughout the 90 minutes however was that when there was a lull in action the game never became scrappy. The passing and endeavour of both sides made for a very enjoyable watch and the home fans almost had something to celebrate as the lightening quick Lennox once again broke free down the right-hand side but could only manage to find the side netting of the West goal.

More corners for both sides followed and in particular one from West should’ve seen the away side break the deadlock but they only managed to fire just over the bar once again.

3 successive corners for the home side followed into the 83rd minute after yet another mazy run from Adam Lennox brought another fine save from West’s excellent keeper. In truth a goal from either side would’ve been extremely cruel on the other in what was a great game of football despite neither net being exposed to a goal. Jarrow did have the ball in the back of the net twice but the referee’s whistle stopped Adam Lennox adding to his 5 pre-season goals.

A very entertaining game between two very good sides.

Attendance:- 139
