Billingham Synthonia 2 – 1 Jarrow (24/10/2020 –3pm)
Northern League Division Two
Billingham Synthonia 2 – 1 Jarrow
24/10/2020 –3pm Kick Off
26’ Howes, 34’ Bielby | 49’ Shaw
Saturday saw Billingham Synthonia
take all 3 points against a much-improved Jarrow at Norton Sports Complex.
It was the visitors however who started
the brighter in a game of very few clear-cut chances. Playing at centre half
Nick Little making his 12th appearance in all competitions for
Jarrow played a long ball over the top that split the Billingham defence wide
open. The ball however seemed to just run away from Adam Lennox slightly and
his right foot shot when bearing down on goal somehow didn’t manage to hit the
target.
The breakthrough did come in the 26th
minute though as a slide through ball was met by Kurtis Howes who was brought
down from behind by Chris Smith and the referee pointed to the spot. Howes then
coolly converted the penalty and the home side were 1-0 up.
Less than 10 minutes later and the
Synners had there second of the game. A fairly innoxious challenge in the
middle of the pitch was blown for as a foul and it allowed Billingham to launch
a free kick into the Jarrow area that wasn’t dealt with properly. The ball fell
to Bielby who took full advantage by side footing his shot past Jak Wells in
goal leaving Jarrow with plenty to do.
Thankfully undeterred the new look
Jarrow kept pressing and man of the match Gary Shaw was causing problems down
the left, squeezing in a cross to find Lennox whose shot was well saved as half
time approached.
Into the second half and it was the
away side again who started the brighter only this time making their possession
and endeavour count. A long free kick from Lee Kerr was brought down by Shaw
who ghosted toward goal before sending a precise shot into the bottom corner. 2-1
and Jarrow back in the game.
After the goal however Jarrow
struggled to get the ball forward with any pace or tempo. Billingham limiting
them to long balls to the again isolated Lennox up front. Adam despite his lone
striker role never stopped running in search of what would’ve been his 9th
goal of the season.
As such it was Billingham who had the
better of the second half chances with Wainwright causing problems and Bielby’s
class shining on a difficult pitch to play football.
Into the last 10 minutes of the match
and Callum Smith was correctly given a second yellow for a mis timed challenge
near the touch line. It was extremely unlucky for Callum as the surface didn’t help
sliding tackles of that nature and he didn’t have to get it wrong by much to make
it look worse than it was.
Billingham then managed to see the
game out without too much trouble but the improvement in Jarrow’s all-round
defensive play was evident throughout. Sacrificing forward play in order to
tighten up at the back is not a long-term plan but one that is very much needed
going forward so despite the result positive things have come out of the defeat.
Well Played Billingham though
deserved winners.
