FA Vase Qualifying Round 2
Jarrow FC 3-2 Birtley Town
10/10/2020 3pm Kick Off
10’ Hargrave, 52’ Allen, 92’ Lennox | 7’ Caygill,
37’ Barwick
On a day that resembled summer the sun shone over Jarrow’s Blue and White army
and saw the South Tynesider’s progress though to the next round of the Vase at
the expense of Birtley Town who matched Jarrow for quality and passing throughout
the 90 minutes.
Things started slowly in what would be a great encounter
but after 5 minutes the tone was set for the rest of the game. The dangerous
Adam Lennox managed to wriggle free from his defender and unselfishly square
the ball to Glen Hargrave who found himself with perhaps too much time before
drawing a quite remarkable save from Phillip Mills in the Birtley goal diving
to his left and one handed he guided the ball out for a corner.
Only seconds later and it was 1-0 to visitors who broke
from the corner, forced a corner of there own and after a great delivery from
the right Caygill powerfully met the cross that left Jak Wells with no chance of
getting in the Jarrow goal.
By the 10th minute however the home side were
level as a foul on the left-hand side saw Callum Smith starting his first game
of the season swing over a free kick onto the head of Glen Hargrave who found
the back of the net. 2 goals in 2 games for the Jarrow forward!
Mills was then at again in the Birtley goal this time
saving superbly from another powerful header from Callum Smith.
In the 20th minute the referee waved away
Birtley protests for a penalty for handball after a scramble in the box saw the
ball hacked away to safety by Davey Smith.
Half chances and great defending then filled in the next
15 minutes and it took some precision passing for the next goal to come.
Birtley passed the ball round the Jarrow defence and a neat finish saw Barwick
grab a deserved goal. The unfortunate Callum Smith looked to have rolled his ankle
in the build up but thankfully was able to carry on.
Just two minutes later and it should’ve been 3 to visitors
as the Birtley player rose from between two markers to head a free kick just
wide of Jak Wells goal. A rising left footed Lee Kerr effort then the ended the
first half chances and It was the visitors who took a deserved 2-1 lead into
the break. Jarrow had played their part in an entertaining first half however
in a much-improved performance with a change of system.
After the sunshine of the first half came the storm of the
second. As the rain lashed down Jarrow’s top goal scorer this season with 7
league goals Adam Lennox chased down his defender and after shoulder barging the
defender off the ball he raced into the box where he squared it to Graeme Mcall
whose looping first time ball found Kris Allen who slotted the ball home past Mills
in the Birtley goal for 2-2 and game on. It was Kris Allen’s first goal of the
season and first start in the cup.
The next passage of play belonged once again to visitors
whose football was much improved from the earlier encounter at the start of the
season. The passing and movement were causing Jarrow problems and on 60 minutes
a rising effort nearly caught Jarrow out. The big chance then came in the 75th
minute when more nice sharp passing led to Birtley’s Dinsley just firing wide, didn’t
miss by much from where we were standing either!
It was then Jarrow’s turn to miss out as a scrappy ball was
almost turned into the net by Adam Lennox but it just trickled wide. Jak Wells
then pulled off what turned out to be a match winning save at the end as goal
scorer Barwick bared down on goal the Jarrow stopper spread himself and literally
smashed the ball back from where it had come from with a thunderous right hand.
There was still time for the visitors to fire wide again
before the match winner came in added time.
For much of the game Birtley’s pressing and possession had
forced Jarrow back and if it wasn’t for the brilliance of the back 4 and keeper
Wells it would’ve been a different story. New signing Dylan Nesbit & Ross
Toward were solid on either side of defence and broke well when they could but the
centre half pairing of Nick Little & Davey Smith was the difference. They
were also extremely well protected by their midfielders which allowed the sometimes-isolated
Lennox who manages to stay switched on for 90+ minutes to cut back inside from
the right and drill an unstoppable left footed effort past the quite brilliant Mills
in the Birtley goal. Cruel on the visitors who had played some great football
but a goal worthy of winning any football match. Que jubilation from the home
socially distanced home fans who hadn’t seen their team win for 4 matches.
Supporters man of the match was Davey Smith
A great day in the cup and thank you to Birtley for the
great game and all the spectators for their exemplary behaviour.
