Northern League Division 2

17/10/2020 – 3pm Kick Off

Jarrow FC 4 – 1 Ryton & Crawcrook Albion

38’ Kerr, 50’ Jones, 72’ Allen(P), 88’ Lennox | 65’ Own Goal (Hargrave)

Jarrow gave debuts to new signings Peter Jones and Gary Shaw in midfield and stuck with Davey Smith & Nick Little as centre halves in a back 4 that also included Phil Gray & Ross Toward.

The opening exchanges were quite even and it took until the 10th for a real chance to be created with RACA’s new signing Cahill-Taylor beating his man down the right before dinking a cross in the area that was well watched and elegantly cleared by Ross Toward who was facing his own goal line at the time.

A tame header from Jarrow forward Adam Lennox was then well saved but the game was starting to pick up with Ryton again breaking and seeing there effort just land wide of the Jarrow goal.

New signing Gary Shaw then moved goalward along the by-line on 15 minutes and picked out Glen Hargrave who slid in and poked the ball goalward but was well thwarted by the RACA full back who did just enough to put him off his stride.

The theme of the game was almost beginning to be you shoot we shoot and on 28 minutes there was a decent chance at both ends with Lennox again only managing to find the keepers gloves and at the other end Jak Wells saved well from an effort on goal by RACA’s Cahill-Taylor who once again tested the Jarrow defence.

New signing Gary Shaw then swung over a corner in the 38th minute that wasn’t dealt with by the RACA defence. Lee Kerr then allowed the ball drop on his right foot and hooked a delicate volley into the bottom corner, the ball bouncing on its way in. 1-0 Jarrow.

Jarrow managed to slow the game down after the goal and made it into half 1-0 up after a fairly even first half. Cahill-Taylor impressing for the visitors and it was a fine strike that separated the sides.

Into the second and it was the home side who looked to press home their advantage and get a second goal and it duly came 5 minutes after the restart with Glen Hargrave grabbing his third league assist of the season after a ball from goal scorer Kerr, Hargrave found new signing Peter Jones who managed to back heel the ball past the RACA keeper.

Then from a corner RACA almost equalised but Jak Wells was once again equal to it beating the ball away to safety. Despite the two-goal advantage there was always a feeling that Jarrow would need a third to cement their lead.

With 65 minutes gone that came true and Ryton & Crawcrook did reduce the deficit through an unlikely source. Jarrow’s top assister of the season Glen Hargrave smashing the ball past his own goal keeper like the hapless Sunderland defender Santiago Vergini against Southampton some 6 years ago. Sunderland ironically playing in blue that day too, a one to forget for lifelong Sunderland supporter Glen who would thankfully have the last say on today’s game to nicely over shadow his own goal.

The lively Adam Lennox was still searching for his 8th goal in 8 starts in the league and he raced through to try and find it but was brought down in the box and the ref awarded the South Tynesider’s a penalty that substitute Kris Allen dispatched in typical ice cool fashion. It was Allen’s second goal in as many games after netting against Birtley the week before.

RACA tried everything they could to get back into the game with a few chances but they found it difficult against a new look Jarrow side who had found themselves again after a few bad weeks. The back four complementing the excellent Jak Wells in goal all afternoon.

As I said before it was Glen Hargrave who had the last say on the game as he squared to Lennox for his 4th assist of the season and 2nd of the game. Lennox composed as ever found the net for his 8th goal in 8 and complete the official scoring.

The introduction of Johnny Wightman almost brought a 5th but as he rounded the keeper and passed the ball into the back of the net the linesman flagged and the referee stopped play. Not long after he blew his whistle for full time.

Man of the match today was Ross Toward for his excellent display at right back. Clearing the ball of the line was just one of the many great things he did throughout. Very tough decision today however with excellent performances all over the park but Ross stood out.

Attendance: - 142
