Match Preview - Billingham Synthonia Saturday 24th October

In bizarre circumstances this fixture last season was cancelled at short notice due to a pandemic that had spread across the globe. It was big news at the time back in March 2020, you may have heard about it………….Anyway, it marked the end of the Northern League season.

The last two fixtures between the two sides have been quite contrasting with a comfortable win for both the home sides, Billingham smashing 4 past the blue and army the last time the two sides met at Norton and Jarrow comfortable 2-0 winners at Perth Green.

Billingham Synthonia are one of the most famous non-league teams in the north east, founded in 1923 the Synners have  reached the 1st round proper of the FA Cup an incredible 7 times.

They have also been Northern League Division 1 champions on 4 separate occasions, the last of which came during the 1995-96 season.

In the early days the club played their games at Belasis Lane and it was there that in 1952 the first ever floodlit game in Northern England took place. Billingham defeating an RAF team 8-4, 3000 people packed in to see what we take for granted these days.

After that Billingham moved to a new stadium in Billingham but due to construction works, recently they have been playing their home games at Norton Sports Complex that shares a club house with the cricket club.

The Synners current manager is ex Gateshead (briefly) manager Dave Dickson who replaced now chairman Jamie Pollock. Pollock played in the premier league for both Middlesbrough & Bolton and also played for Manchester City before the money came.

The Synners currently find themselves 8th in the division 2 table with 5 wins from their 10 games and scoring 29 goals. It should be a fascinating game due to Jarrow’s recent upturn in form and Billinghams ability to score lots of goals. Saturday saw them destroy Durham City 7-1 with new signing D’Andre Wainwright banging in a debut hattrick.

Safe travels to the Blue & White army wear your mask and follow the guidelines!
