Match Preview

Jarrow v Yorkshire Amateur Saturday 31st October 2020

Yorkshire Amateur are the latest side that will visit Perth Green In this seasons FA Vase campaign. Its 12 months and a few weeks since Jarrow bowed out of last years competition reaching the 1st round proper for the first time in the club’s history. This season they will be looking to go one better if they can over come a side flying high in the tier above.

The Ammers hail from Leeds and play their football in the Northern Counties East League which is the equivalent to our Northern League Division One. The Leeds team have already visited the north East once this season losing on Penalties to Crook Town in the FA cup in a mid-week fixture so they will be looking for revenge as the make the trip up the A1.

Yorkshire Amateur were formed in 1918 and have enjoyed FA cup success reaching the 1st Round proper on two occasions.  Both times losing to third division opponents in Carlisle & Lincoln City respectively.

The Ammers original home was that of their illustrious neighbours Leeds United at Ellend Road. After Leeds City folded the Amateur moved in until they themselves moved to their home ever since Bracken Edge in 1922. Leeds United bought the lease on Ellend Road for £250 in 1922 and the rest as they say is history.

Yorkshire Amateur for all of there non league status actually boast a full international footballer.  Bradford born Tabish Hussain was on loan at the club last year and has appeared for his country Pakistan on a few occasions in particular coming on as a substitute in a world cup qualifying match.

Perhaps Yorkshire Amateurs finest exports are Jackie Overfield & Gary Strodder. Jackie went on to play over 150 times for Leeds United before joining our north east friends Sunderland in 1960 where he played a further 60 games. Strodder would play over 500 league games for various sides including West Brom, West Ham & Hartlepool United.

Saturday will certainly be Jarrow’s biggest test of the season and perhaps biggest game ever. It should prove to be a great occasion whatever the result and hopefully everyone stays safe.

Please enjoy yourself and arrive to avoid disappoint.

Cheers
