Jarrow FC 0-0 Yorkshire Amateur (Jarrow win 3-0 on pens)
30/10/2020 3pm Kick Off

On a day that was billed ‘The biggest in Jarrow FC’s history’ the players certainly didn’t disappoint during a lively and high quality goalless draw with a side from one tier above in Yorkshire Amateur.

With 9 players unavailable for selection for the home side Dan Smith slotted into midfield for his first start of the season and Steven Hubery made only his third start of the season and first in the cup.

It didn’t take long for this classic cup tie to get going and after some nice passing football Dan Smith had an early effort saved well to the keepers right.

Adam Priestley then went close for the Ammers with a delightful chip that hit the cross bar and was cleared to safety by the Jarrow defence.

The Ammers were starting to stamp their authority on the game and set the tone as many expected them to with Luke Dean forcing a good save from Hubery in the Jarrow goal after 12 minutes. It looked like it was going to be a long afternoon for Jarrow as the Ammers looked comfortable in possession.

It was Jarrow however who snatched the initiative and should taken the lead. Dylan Nesbitt playing only his 2nd game of the season played a dangerous low cross across the 6 yard box that was neither turned in by a forward or dealt with by a defender and  the ball was eventually turned behind for a corner by the left fullback.

Then after 23 minutes came the big moment of the game. Kris Allen’s constant pressing and opportunism saw him block an attempted clearance from the Ammers keeper after a back pass. The rebounded nicely into Allen’s path who was just about to side foot home only for the Yorkshire defender to pull the ball back using his hand. Only a few feet from the goal line and stopping a clear goal scoring opportunity but inexplicably missed by the officials. Play was waved on and the home side were left frustrated and annoyed.

The players collectively didn’t allow that injustice to affect their game and instead they used it as a catalyst to dominate the ball and the game.

Lennox chipped a delightful shot just over the bar moments later. The theme of the first half being great attacking football mixed with great fair challenges all over the park and it was a fantastic cup tie for the neutral.

Into the second half it was more of the same.  2 minutes in and back from injury Darryll Donnelly powered a header off the cross bar.

Undeterred by the inability to find the net Jarrow continued to press and Davey Smith saw his low shot go wide before another header this time from brother Dan went just wide from a curling right-hand side cross.

In between Jarrow attacks the Ammers certainly looked dangerous and had a few counter attacks that left Jarrow’s Blue and White army hearts racing. The longer the game stayed at 0-0 the more likely a counter attack goal from the Ammers looked likely.

The introduction of Kai Elliott started causing the Ammers new problem down the left and he almost broke the deadlock with an effort but was denied by another smart save after cutting inside and striking low toward goal.

Kris Allen then saw a near post strike turned round the post as the game drew to a close by the brilliant Dixon in the Yorkshire goal but man of the match Allen wasn’t to be denied for long as the game went into penalties.

Having already won once in the vase on pens against Steeton in the 1st qualifying round Jarrow had least had some confidence before the spot kicks were taken.

Kris Allen confidently stepped up to take the first one and set the tone for the rest by smashing it top right past Dixon who had no chance.

Priestly then put the first Ammers pen wide and Kai Elliott saw his effort saved by Dixon.

Next step forward hero Steve Hubery. Brilliant throughout the 90 minutes Hubery dived full stretch to his left and with his right hand tipped the ball onto and round the post. Then Adam Lennox with a carbon copy of Allens strike put the hosts 2-0 up.

Hubery then walked back into his goal knowing another save would surely end the contest. Again, he chose his own left and again he saved the ball. This time the ball was a much better height for him and he was able to get both hands to it and palm it well away from goal.

Midfielder Graeme Mcall then walked from the centre circle and placed the ball down. There was an expectant hush from the onlooking crowd but in reality, disbelief that it had come down to this moment. The underdogs with a chance to win the tie from 12 yards. Mcall didn’t disappoint and stroked the pen to the keepers left before turning and running towards his jubilant teammates. The noise was electric and the smiles on the Jarra lads and lasses’ faces was a joy to see.

Commiserations to our opponents Yorkshire Amateur who will no doubt continue to dominant their division.
