In a game that looked massively in doubt a few hours prior Jarrow came from behind to beat a youthful Gateshead side. Non stop rain had fell on South Tyneside for almost 24 hours yet the pitch staff at Perth Green managed to prepare a surface that was in better shape than that of the Premier League encounter at Ellend road in Leeds on the same night.

It was Gateshead who drew first blood in a first half littered with chances for both sides. Eddie Thomas latched onto a through ball and slotted home past Hubery in the Jarrow goal to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

The early goal helped to settle the visitors into a rhythm and within a few minutes were dominating possession and chances. Consecutive corners soon followed as Jarrow struggled to get a foothold in the game and the quick incisive passing by Gateshead was impressive as they looked to build on their advantage.

As with most Jarrow performances however even when they aren’t playing particularly well, they manage to make chances though the quality in the side. Adam Lennox could only blaze the ball over from 10 yards after a cut back by Davey Smith from the right wing but signs were better for the home side.

A further speculative effort flashed just wide from Gateshead before Adam Lennox beat two men but could only fire wide. Channon North & Lee Kerr then had a chance a piece with the latter’s effort flying just wide.

Then as the game was opening up Gateshead won a free kick 20 yards from goal that curled onto the cross bar from Anderson, Carson was then on hand to double the Tynesider’s advantage nodding the ball past Hubery who could do nothing about it.

Then from a Gary Shaw corner Gateshead struggled to clear their lines and after a few moments of pressure Shaw himself saw an effort well saved by the keeper Cameron.

The final chance of the half came as Gateshead pressed forward in search of a third and almost got it but for a brilliant reaction save from Hubery who managed to get a hand to Andersons strike and turn the ball over for a corner. An extremely entertaining first half ended 2-0 to the young visitors.

If the first half had started quickly, the second was about to explode. Adam Lennox who had missed two decent chances in the first half pounced twice in the space of 2 minutes to draw Jarrow level the first was a solo effort reminiscent of his 90th minute winner against Birtley, he shifted the ball onto his left foot and guided it into the bottom left corner. The second was tapped home after great work on the right-hand side by new signing Channon North and it was 2-2.

Within 10 minutes of the Lennox brace and the dramatic turnaround was complete. Captain Jordon Mellish who had missed much of the previous 2 months through injury grabbed in his 2nd goal in 2 games to give Jarrow a 3-2 lead. If Saturdays 95th minute equaliser was up for debate about it being an own goal or not, there was nothing left to wonder with this goal. Lee Kerr swung in a corner onto the head of Mellish whose bullet header left the keeper with no chance.

Davey Smith then found Lennox in the box after more great work down the right-hand side and the forward tried to pass his shot into the net but put it just wide of the goal and his hattrick would have to wait.

Jarrow were starting to get in behind the Heed defence at an alarmingly rate and when Channon North set Adam Lennox racing through with a precision pass the striker was bundled to the ground and the ref had no hesitation but to point to the spot. Allen stepped up to take it and struck the ball into the net hitting the post on the way in. 4-2.

Lennox did grab his hattrick and 12th goal of the season a few moments later in the 75th minute when tireless midfielder Kris Allen played the striker in behind again and this time, he slotted home with his left foot to make it 5-2.

This remarkable game was threatening to turn into a rout for the Gateshead youngsters who had played so well in the first 45 but coupled with their own inexperience and Jarrow’s relentless intensity the home side continued to push for goals. Once again Lennox found himself in behind but this time, he was forced wide, only for the hattrick hero to swing over a cross that was met on the edge of the box by Gary Shaw who, allowing the ball bounce struck a sweet half volley into the top right corner for the 6th.

Liam Murray was then introduced and his pace started causing chaos almost immediately. He twice went on mazy runs and the second of these resulted in Jarrow’s 7th of the night as he slotted the ball home on his Jarrow debut cutting in from the right and beating a few players in the process.

A quite unbelievable turnaround was complete and the ghosts of Jarrow’s 7-2 reverse in the same circumstances against Tow Law earlier in the season had been well and truly exercised. The archetypal game of two halves was complete and it will be Jarrow who progress to the next round. A wounded Gateshead must regroup and take heart from their first half display. With no games until at least the new year in the League I hope you all stay safe and enjoy the Christmas break.
