 Northern League Division 2

04/08/2021 – 7.45pm Kick Off

Jarrow FC 2 – 1 Carlisle City

3’ Blackburn, 35’ North | 77’ Atkinson

On another sun drenched evening on South Tyneside Jarrow entertained Carlisle City in their second home game in 5 days at the beginning of the new season.

Unlike Saturday against Easington however Jarrow’s bright opening to the game was rewarded sooner than they could’ve hoped. Within 2 minutes a ball over the top to Jason Blackburn was wrongly given offside but the signs were good with Carlisle playing a high line and Indeed only a minute later Blackburn turned provider playing a through ball into the path of Channon North who coolly slotted home.

The next few chances though fell to the visitors as they tried to get themselves back into the game. There was a shot that was flashed wide after 23 minutes and a series of blocked shots and great challenges kept the visitors at bay. A solid defensive performance from Darryll Donnelly & Kris Summers protected goalkeeper Simon Parkin brilliantly.

Then unlike England from the Euro 2020 final Jarrow made it 2 despite scoring early. Against the run of play Gary Shaw swung a right footed cross into the feet of Blackburn who managed to adjust his body, turn and poke home from 6 yards.

The second half started as the first had ended with Carlisle seeing the majority of the ball. Jarrow however we’re in no mood to let the visitors back in and kept City away from the danger area with another series of blocks and important challenges all over the pitch.

At times during the second period however Jarrow couldn’t get out of their own half and Carlisle’s constant pressure was threatening to break through, thankfully for the home side though full backs Scott Wallace & Ross Toward saw to most of the wide threats and cleared the ball upfield at every opportunity.

The visitors did register a shot after a few in-swinging corners had been dealt with by Parkin in the Jarrow goal. The Carlisle forward brought the ball down well and laid it off into the path of Palmer who could only fire wide.

As the game went on and Carlisle began drop off in pace from all their efforts Jarrow’s midfield duo of Kris Allen & Jackson Waller started to dictate the pace of the game and managed the game beautifully with North providing a constant out ball up front. Waller also had a low free kick well saved on 65 minutes as Jarrow looked to see the game out.

Channon did have another shot blocked behind for a corner a few minutes later as Jarrow turned managing the game into trying to kill it off and moments later almost did kill the visitors off after great footwork and a teasing cross from North, Blackburn’s shot cannoned off the cross bar in the 76th minute.

A minute later however and the visitors had a goal back. A wicked free kick was swung into the area from their left hand side and it was the ever willing Atkinson who rose highest to nod the ball over Parkin in the Jarrow goal.

For the remaining few minutes Carlisle tried in vain find an equaliser and despite a few decent shots wide couldn’t find a telling cross or pass and Jarrow who had defended well all night deserved to hang on and claim their first win of the season.
