Newcastle Uni 2-2 Jarrow FC (07/08/2021 – 3pm)
Northern League Division 2
07/08/2021 – 3pm Kick Off
Newcastle Uni 2-2 Jarrow FC
20’ Waller (OG), 45’ Coates | 28’, 56’ North
On Saturday Jarrow travelled to Prudhoe to face the tough challenge of
Newcastle Uni at Kimberly Park, having lost 2-1 on our only other Northern
League visit their two seasons ago.
In what proved to be an ultimately scrappy affair it was Jarrow who had the
first notable chance of the game with the brilliant Gary Shaw hitting the post
after being played in behind by Jason Blackburn and turning away from his
marker along the touchline.
The ball was continually given away by both sides and on 20 minutes Newcastle
won a corner, the ball was then curled into the box and bounced before it
entered the 6-yard area, causing confusion amongst the Jarrow defence and in
trying to stop the ball from getting to the Uni forward Jackson Waller
inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for the opening goal. If he hadn’t
went for it however Newcastle would’ve had a tap in. 1-0.
Jarrow for all their sloppy possession were still trying to play football
and Liam Murray raced clear and saw his right foot drilled shot come back off
the post. Almost immediately after that chance it was Channon’s turn to fire
the ball towards the Uni goal and this time for the visitors the post didn’t get
in the way. 1-1.
The remaining minutes of the first half went past without many incidents
mainly due to good defending but Jackson Waller and Kris Allen in the middle of
the park for Jarrow controlled the tempo and the former was pinging balls left,
right and centre attempting to make things happen.
On the stroke of half time however Jarrow lost concentration and for the
second time Newcastle Uni took the lead. A poor ball was intercepted and Uni
broke quickly, an inside ball being picked up by Coates who advanced towards
goal unchallenged before slotting the ball past Jak Wells in the Jarrow goal.
2-1 half time.
Into the second and Jarrow continued to press for an equaliser that they
felt they had a chance of grabbing.
7 minutes in and after a fantastic leap from Channon he managed to nod the
ball onto Jason Blackburn who neatly lifted the ball over the keeper, as he
chased the loose ball the Uni defender got his body in between the goal and the
ball and as he nodded it clear Blackburn with eyes on the ball tried to hook it
goalward. An awful smacking noise followed and unfortunately for the defender he
had received a boot to the face for his trouble. It was a great piece of defending
and the ball was cleared to safety. For Jason’s part in the incident, he was
given a second yellow card for dangerous play. Thankfully the Uni defender was
able to carry on but Jarrow were now down to 10 men.
Spurred on by the sending off Jarrow grew in confidence and a sublime left
footed cross was met by the leaping head of Channon North who nodded the ball
over the advancing goal keeper to square the game once again for Jarrow. 2-2.
Neither side could manage to add to the scoring in the 30 minutes that
followed but Jak Wells did make a few good saves, notably from a close-range
free kick that was turned round the post.
A draw in the end was a fair result as neither side deserved to win or lose
and both in truth had good chances that weren’t taken. Not a bad-tempered game
that was marred by a sending off but as previously mentioned it was good to see
no one seriously hurt.
Jackson Waller was awarded the man of the match mainly for his first half
display and being the one player trying to make things happen in the opponent’s
half. Other notable performances were from the tremendous North who won almost
everything he went for, the tireless Kris Allen in midfield who never stopped running
and broke up many attacks and also for Gary Shaw who is a constant threat and
also covers his full back for 90 minutes.
It may have been a disappointing performance but an away point is always gratefully
received and we look to take a bit of confidence into Tuesday nights game away
at the classy Tow Law.
