On a night where the sun shone directly into the eyes of Jarrow’s players in the first half they paid the price for sloppy defending against a quick and incisive side on a pleasant evening in August.

The game started evenly with the home side attempting to cut the Jarrow defence open within the first few minutes of the game but both efforts were cut out by defenders Scott Wallace & Darryll Donnelly. For Jarrow’s part a Kris Allen through ball was blazed over the bar by Jason Blackburn.

The game followed that pattern for much of the game, slow measured build up from the visitors, quick release ball and men bombing forward behind the lines for Tow Law. Kris Allen was doing a good job of breaking up play throughout an entertaining opening 20 minutes.

The warning sign for Jarrow ‘s new look 3 at the back defence came on 9 minutes however when a ball over the top wasn’t dealt with and the striker Moffat controlled well but put the ball wide of Jak Wells post.

The home side were beginning to dominate the ball and made the most of their possession superiority by getting shots away and curling crosses into the box. On 20 minutes a free kick was awarded on the right wing much to the consternation of the away side and as the ball was swung in towards goal it was missed by everyone including the goalkeeper who could only pluck it out from the back of his own net. 1-0

Things went from bad to worse as Jarrow looked for an instant reply.  The ball was lost and played quickly forward to Hurworth who sent firstly the keeper one way then the recovering centre half the other, he then had the simple task of rolling it into the back of the empty net. 2-0.

A right footed Kris Allen shot followed and a decent spell of Jarrow possession give the away side some confidence. On 35 minutes and after numerous balls into the box Gary Shaw managed to send over a pinpoint cross to top goal scorer Channon North who guided his back post header into the top right-hand corner of the net for his 4th goal of the season. 2-1.

As Jarrow pressed for an equaliser the sucker punch was about to win the game for Tow Law. Jak Wells attempted pass was cut out and despite desperately trying to retrieve the ball and the situation Moffat was able to coolly tap the ball home to regain the 2-goal lead. 3-1.

Into the 2nd half and it was the home side who carved the first opportunity blazing the ball over the top of Jak’s bar.

For the remaining 40 minutes the majority of the attacking play would come from the visitors save for sporadic counter attacks from Tow Law who seemed happy to sit on their 3-1 lead.

Despite Jarrow’s massive possession advantage in the second half, they were unable to create anything that really threatened the home goal; indeed, the keeper didn’t have to make one save in the second period as they saw out the game professionally.

It was encouraging from a Jarrow perspective that they didn’t allow their heads to drop and continued to press for the full 90 minutes, creating half chances against a side happy to allow them to have the ball.

All in all, it was a disappointing outing but take away the three mistakes and focus on the play with the ball and it wasn’t a bad performance.

Jarrow will be hoping for more cutting edge at home to Birtley on Saturday.
