Washington 1-6 Jarrow FC

Both teams went into the game on Saturday having lost 6-1 in their previous match. Washington away at Brandon & Jarrow at home Willington and if there was ever a game that promised goals it was this one.
For the first 14 minutes the game was fairly even with both sides carving out half chances, Blackburn scoring a rightly ruled out for offside tap in. Washington had decent possession in the opening advances of the game and had a series of corners that amounted to nothing.
On 14 minutes another Gary Shaw cross found Jason Blackburn who scored his first goal of the season with a right foot tap in. The Tall striker had already put the ball in the earlier only for his effort to be rules out for offside. 1-0.
The home side responded well however and had a few chances to equalise before Jarrow took control of the game. First a right footed shot from the angle hit the post and then a lob shot from the same position landed narrowly wide of Hubery’s far post.
Jarrow kept their composure, Bri Johnson turned on the ball and sent a delicious right footed pass in behind the Washy defence for Hargrave to chase. Hargrave coolly rounded the keeper and side footed the ball in the path of Jason Blackburn who had the simple task of tapping the ball home. 2-0.
Just 2 minutes later and Jarrow where at it again, A Glen Hargrave ball found Jackson Waller in space who after cutting back inside drilled a sweet left foot shot into the bottom right corner of the Washington net for 3-0.
Another few corners came and went for the home side as they looked to get back into the game but it was the visitors who scored again. 3rd goal scorer Jackson Waller picked up the loose ball after a Washington Corner and found Gary Shaw who was just inside of the right touchline on half way. The Winger who already had 5 assists to his name this season curled a left footed through ball over the Washy defence and Glen Hargrave turned goal scorer by neatly tucking the ball in the back of the net.
4-0 at half time and Jarrow were proving to be as clinical today as Willington were on Wednesday against us. Washington had chances but just couldn’t find that final ball.
The second half started much like the first had with both teams trying to force their way forward. Yet again it was the visitors whose clinical finish rose to the fore as top assister Gary Shaw crossed his 7th assist of the season right on the head of Jason Blackburn who cushioned his header into the far corner of the net for a brilliant hattrick. 3 goals from in and around the 6-yard box hadn’t told the story of the work rate and great movement off the ball from striker Blackburn.
At 5-0 you could forgive Washington if their heads went down but to their credit, they didn’t stop trying to play football all afternoon. A nice through ball was latched onto by the striker who facing two Jarrow defenders screwed his shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal to make it 5-1. Just reward for some nice football.
As they continued to flow back and forth Jarrow had 3 consecutive corners, the 3rd of which was swung in by Shaw and nodded on by Darryll Donelly into the path of Blackburn controlled and struck it on the half volley past the helpless keeper who had no chance. 6-1 and the scoring would end then and there in the 64th minute.
The rest of game saw half chances and plenty of nice football but no clear-cut chances.
While it was nice to banish the defensive nightmare of Wednesday it was even more important that we kept creating chances which were in abundance throughout.
A very productive afternoon watched by a decent away following for the blue and white army.
