Billingham Synthonia 3-0 Jarrow FC (15/09/2021 7.30pm Kick Off)

Northern League Division Two

Billingham Synthonia 3-0 Jarrow FC

15/09/2021 7.30pm Kick Off

27’ Howard, 33’ & 90 Howes | No Goal scorer

Jarrow fell to a first defeat in 6 league games as they travelled to Teesside to face the current 2nd placed side in Division Two in a difficult evening with some clinical finishing on show.

The game started brightly for the visitors when a Glen Hargrave long throw was headed just over the bar by Kris Summers. Jarrow were defending well from the front with Jason Blackburn & Kris Allen attributing to a high press that had been successful for the previous 5 games.

Despite that good start Synners never really looked in too much trouble and knocked the ball around comfortably themselves and started to add a threat to their growing possession, a defensive mix up after 24 minutes allowed the Synners forward to nip in and shoot but it was cleared by off the line by Darryll Donnelly playing in his 10th game of the season.

The warning signs were there and Jarrow didn’t see them in time. Just a few moments later as Synners appealed for a handball from a shot that was blocked in the box the Jarrow lads switched off and Howard unleashed a left foot shot that was dispatched into the corner of the net to make it 1-0.

Things were about to get even worse for the visitors as Kurtis Howes was allowed far too much time and space before slotting the ball past the helpless Steve Hubery in goal.

The deficit was almost reduced a minute later as a Brian Johnson free kick was brilliantly tipped over the bar from the Synners keeper. As the half was looking to end Jarrow were desperately trying to get one back before the whistle blew. A Gary Shaw free kick was met by the head of Donnelly and his header was tipped expertly round the post for another Jarrow corner. Shaw’s corner was then swung in and again met by a Jarrow head, Mcall seeing his effort fly just wide of the post.

Half time and a deserved lead for the home side but in truth it could’ve been very different with those late chances.

Into the second and the frustration of the bizarre decisions from the officials was threatening to ruin the game. In an otherwise good footballing match tempers were starting to fray due to the strange nature of some free kicks that were being given.

Steve Hubery was called into action early on in the second period as he made a miraculous double save to deny the Synners a third and potentially match ending goal as he parried a free kick and then blocked the rebound before it was hooked to safety by Kris Allen.

The game then hit a lull as the home side controlled some of the ball and Jarrow struggled to break down their resilient defence that had only conceded 16 goals before this game.

Jarrow who had recently made a habit of fighting until the end of games certainly hadn’t given up however and a long throw from Glen was headed on by a defender and then headed towards goal by Gary Shaw looking for his 5th goal of the season but once again the keeper was equal to it and made a great save to his right.

Channon North a second half substitute thought he had made it 2-1 after a lovely slide rule through ball to him from Jason was tucked neatly into the net but the offside flag was raised.

Synners also had chances towards the end of the game as they looked to finish off, Steve Hubery making a fine save low to his left from a powerful effort.

As Jarrow pressed higher to get a goal back the top goal scorer in Division 2 Kurtis Howes cooly finished off a counter attack to round off a good night for him personally and for the team. 3-0 and the game was absolutely over. Darryll Donnelly won the Man of the match award for a number of interceptions and huge tackles at the back, not a classic but certainly not a disaster and Jarrow will feel slightly aggrieved they didn’t at least get on the scoresheet with Synners keeper Yaqub in great form.
