Northern League Division Two

Jarrow FC 0-3 Heaton Stannington

22/09/2021 7.30pm Kick Off

No Goal Scorer | Stephenson (16), Burn (36), Hopper (46)

A season record attendance at Perth Green witnessed top of the table Heaton Stannington breeze past a Jarrow side low on confidence with work to do to put things right.

It started well for the home side however and a left footed Glen Hargrave shot that went over the bar was a sign of the threat that Jarrow carry.

Within a few minutes of that Jarrow threat however Heaton had settled into the game and started to get the ball down and play. A feature of both sides was the need to try and play good football and who wouldn’t on a surface like that. The pitch was playing like a carpet and perfect for passing football.

The deadlock should’ve been broken on 7 minutes when a Gary Shaw corner to the back post was nodded just wide of the far post by Darryll Donnelly. Further signs of the quality on show.

The game then entered a bit of a lull with both sides competing for possession in the middle of park. A Channon North poke over the bar the only moment of danger in a 10-minute period of battle.

Then in the 18th minute the league leaders showed their quality. A right foot curling shot from the left was palmed away by Hubs in the Jarrow goal but only as far as Dan Stephenson who tapped the ball home from a few yards. First blood to the visitors.

The goal promoted the away side forward and forced Jarrow deeper. The Heaton left back unlucky not to make it two with a thunderbolt from distance flashing wide of the Jarrow goal after 22 minutes.

A quick incisive break down the left soon followed with Heaton forward Liam McBryde inexplicably putting the ball over the bar from a few yards out.

A few minutes later and Jarrow were now enjoying a lot more of the ball and when it dropped to Gary Shaw in the box and he jinked past the defender the excitement rose in the stands. His right foot effort however, was beaten away well by Regan in the Heaton goal to keep it 1-0.

Then on 36 minutes Heaton struck again. A ball was knocked inside and controlled well by Andrew Burn who taking the ball in his stride unleashed a strike that dipped and bounced in front of Hubs who saw it too late to be able to get across to it and the ball nestled in the bottom left-hand corner.

The second half started like the first with Jarrow on the front foot. A Hargrave cross just too strong for Channon North to get his head on but good signs early on.

2 minutes later though came the killer blow. An innoxious looking run down the left-hand side from Hopper caused Ross Toward to slip at the vital moment allowing the Heaton man Hopper a run on goal and he beautifully clipped a curling chip over Hubs leaving him with no chance and the game was effectively over as a contest.

A period of both sides struggling to get a grip of the game and the ball then followed the goal until a ball out wide to Gary Shaw was controlled and whipped over viciously to the back post towards flying forward Glen Hargrave who saw the ball whistle over his head and out for a goal kick.

What followed was basic control of the match from the visitors. They held a high line and forced Jarrow to play long balls out wide that for the most part was dealt with. In the opposition half they hunted in packs to snuff out any threats and even moved the ball quickly when in possession.

The game repeated that format until a long ball over the top was controlled well by the forward and as he advanced was adjudged to have been fouled by Donnelly who was tracking his movements. On seeing the replay, the decision looked harsh but a penalty was awarded nevertheless. Dean Holmes stepped up to take it but was denied brilliantly by penalty hero Steve Hubery.

Heaton kept the pressure on after the penalty miss and a snap shot sailed just over the bar with 5 minutes to go. Jarrow had been chasing shadows for most of the game and looked a beaten side by this point.

Brian Johnson saw an effort on goal deflect wide for a corner. The resulting kick was swung in by Scott Wallace who almost scored himself, direct from the corner spot but it curled just wide.

A deserved win for Heaton but Jarrow will reflect on 1 shot on target and know they need to find a way of cutting out the mistakes and being more potent in front of goal.

Man of the Match went to Brian Johnson who didn’t allow the score line to affect his performance. A leader until the final whistle and beyond.
