Jarrow FC 6-3 Sunderland West End (25/09/2021 3pm Kick Off)
Northern League Division Two
Jarrow FC 6-3 Sunderland West End
Jarrow went into this one on the back of 3 straight league
defeats and found themselves in 10th while Sunderland West End had
won 4 on the belt and were flying high in 2nd place.
The game started slowly with both sides happy to conservatively
knock the ball around. Then out of nothing after 4 minutes West End passed the
forward with some intent and despite the ball looking like it was stuck under
Lewis Charlton’s boot, he managed to loft it over Hubs and find the top corner
to give Sunderland the lead and give the Jarrow fans that deflated feeling of
going behind yet again.
To their credit however Jarrow tried to hit back instantly
but a Gary Shaw snapshot was well saved by Bussey in goal.
Despite West Ends terrific start Summers & Donnelly were
bossing the back line for Jarrow and comfortably dealing with any threats sent
their way. That composed play was also allowing full backs Wallace & Toward
to get forward and support the midfield.
In the 15th minute West End almost made it 2. A ball
over the top was well controlled and poked towards goal, it looked like it was
rolling into the bottom corner until Hubery managed to get down low and palm it
wide.
Then the tide of the game changed. An accurate cross field
ball from Lewis Leech starting his 4th game of the season found Shaw
down the left. Instead of controlling Shaw hooked a cross towards the back post
and there was Channon North to guide the ball into the far corner with a delicate
header. 1-1.
Jarrow began to pile forward and a revitalised Channon was looking
confident. Back heeling the ball in behind to Gary Shaw who was well challenged
by a West Defender.
In the 24th another lovely Lewis Leech through
ball was again back heeled by Channon into the path of Shaw who tried to play
it back to the centre forward. He missed it but Jason put it back across where goal
Shaw latched onto it and fired toward goal drawing another great save from
Bussey in goal. The West End keeper however could only parry the ball and
Channon was waiting to tap in his 2nd of the afternoon for 2-1.
15 minutes later a sublime ball over the top from Johnson found
Jason Blackburn on his unfamiliar right-wing position, as he drove toward goal,
he cut the back to Channon who back flicked the ball into the path of Lewis
Leech who calmly slid the ball to Shaw who drilled the ball home to make it
3-1.
Into the second half and Blackburn started a move on the
right, playing the ball infield to Johnson who clipped it across to Shaw. Shaw
gathered, looked up and pinged a back post cross toward to Blackburn who rose
above the defender to nod in for his 13th goal of the season.
With Jarrow comfortable at 4-1 the visitors were given a
lifeline as an innoxious looking shot wasn’t dealt with by Hubs and the ball
trickled over the line. Two minutes later using the impetus the 2nd
goal had given them Sunderland moved the ball forward and Moncur curled a
delicious left footed shot into the inside netting of the Jarrow goal, 4-3 and
it was now very much game back on.
After the 3rd West End goal they took control of
the game and Jarrow were struggling to get out their own half. It was important
that the home side weathered the storm and they did really well to keep the
away side out.
Jarrow were still dangerous on the break and Channon ran onto
a lofted Lewis Leech through ball that he could only knock wide but the game
was opening up nicely again.
Then as Jarrow’s confidence regrew another Leech through ball
found Shaw who could only manage to smash a shot over the bar.
With just under 20 minutes to go in this fascinating game
Shaw picked the pocket of the defender and played a quick ball centrally to
North who controlled and played it straight back to Shaw who composed himself
and side footed the ball home for his 6th of the season, on top of
the 15 assists that he had already managed.
Into the 86th minute and temporary right winger
and leading goal scorer Jason Blackburn sent a forward ball over the top for
Channon North to chase. Channon managed to control the ball with his head and
it fell onto his foot beautifully before tucking it away for his first hattrick
of the season and his 9th in all competitions.
It stayed 6-3 and Jarrow took all 3 points for the first time
in 4 games. A convincing win against the side who have scored more goals than
anyone else in the division bagging 46 goals in 15 games. The result leaves us
with a goal difference of 0 now with 34 scored & 34 conceded. A huge step
in the right direction.
Channon North was named MOTM but in truth it was hardest
decision of the season with so many good performances in blue.
