Blyth Town 0-3 Jarrow
20/02/2022 – 3pm Kick Off
No Scorer | Channon North (16, 48) Stephen Wilkinson (81)
Jarrow travelled to struggling Blyth Town on a glorious sunshine filled February afternoon looking for their first win since mid December and first of the year.
In a frantic opening few minutes both Jarrow & Blyth were firmly on the front foot with the visitors having the first chance of the game with a missed over head kick but they were lucky to survive a penalty appeal moments later.
Both sides continued to attack with Steve Hubery being forced into some top one on one saves after straight balls over the top were causing havoc in the Jarrow defence.
It was through the most experienced player on the pitch who would break the deadlock grabbing his 19th goal of the season. An in swinging corner from Brian Johnson was headed back into the path of Channon by Nick Little and the former steadied himself and with his back to goal elegantly stroked an overhead kick home from about 10 yards, one bounce and into the net for 1-0 Jarrow.
After Jarrow dominated possession and the midfield battles early on Blyth gained a stronger foothold in the game and pushed Jarrow further and further back. They were carving out half chances and winning plenty corners (7 in total) in an action packed first half.
Into the second half and the home side picked up where they left the first on the front foot pushing for an equaliser.
As the home side pressed however gaps opened up and not long after the restart Lewis Leech found himself in space and after a clever back heel into space Channon North latched onto the ball and advanced towards goal, taking a few small touches before coolly slotting the ball into the left hand corner of the net with a low finish.
Once again however after having gone behind Blyth didn’t allow their heads to drop and kept plugging away at the Jarrow backline. Largely this was without success but with Glen Hargrave working tirelessly on the right hand side and helping out his defence Jarrow were able to cope well with the attacks being sent forward.
Then came the controversy. The Blyth forward went down in front of Gohery but there looked minimal contact from the full back, much to everyone’s surprise the ref pointed to the spot for a penalty. With the Jarrow players protesting the linesman got involved. After consulting with his linesman the referee bravely overturned his original decision much to the delight of Jarrow pland the vocal blue and white army who felt justice had been done.
With just under 10 minutes left on the clock Mr consistency and captain Scott Wallace was played the ball by Steve Hubery who had cut out yet another ball over the top. Wallace steadied himself picked out the forward of run of striker Stephen Wilkinson freshly on the pitch who lifted the ball over the advancing keeper into the back of the net for his 4th Jarrow goal and ultimately the goal that ended Blyth’s resistance.
With minutes remaining of the game Blyth yet again moved the ball forward and won themselves a few corners. The ball was delivered and controlled by he forward who swivelled nicely before firing towards the top corner, only for Steve Hubery to acrobatically dive to his left and tip the ball over the bar. Definitely one for the cameras!
