Jarrow 2-2 Newcastle Uni

16/02/2022 – 7.30pm Kick Off

Glen Hargrave (73) Gary Shaw (94) | Keith Douglas (13) Teluwani Osiyemi (58)

On a night where weather warnings were in place the hardy boys from Jarrow & Newcastle Uni braved the elements and played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in front of a decent crowd in the circumstances.

The Uni who found themselves 4th in the League and playing remarkably their 2nd game of the day began the match by dominating much of the possession with both sides realising early on that playing any sort of high ball was entirely fruitless.

Indeed, it was the Uni who had the first real chance, a turn and snap shot going just wide of the post after a neatly worked free kick.

Then with 12 minutes on the clock some sloppy passing from Jarrow allowed Newcastle to advance down the right and after the ball was cut back nicely Douglas made no mistake with a neat finish.

It was a game devoid of chances in the first half but there was plenty to be happy about from both sides. Nick Little who had started at right back but subsequently moved back into centre half because of injury to Kris Summers was having a particularly impressive game, dealing with everything that the Uni were throwing forward. From an attacking point of view Jarrow were struggling in the final third however, despite playing some neat passing football in defence and midfield.

On 43 minutes after Gary Shaw had won a corner & Luke Hudson swung it in the second cross was flicked towards goal by Hargrave only for the Uni keeper to save comfortably.

Into the second half and the home side stepped up their approach play. Gary Shaw crossing into the box but it was parried away by the keeper, only for Jordan Reed to follow up by flashing the ball just past the post. The best chance of the game so far for the Blue & white army.

After 55 minutes one of the Uni players appeared to wipe out Reed with an arm and the tall forward was unable to continue, the second injury of the game for Jarrow and their depleted squad.

On 58 minutes Osiyemi appeared to foul Scott Wallace in the build-up but didn’t allow that to disturb him as he shuffled inside and unleashed a powerful dipping effort that Hubery wasn’t able to keep out. 2-0 and the Uni were in control.

That goal didn’t dent Jarrow’s enthusiasm for the game however and with Cody Bell making runs down the right and Glen Hargrave buzzing around the business end of the pitch things were starting to happen.

A cross field ball from Gary Shaw onto the toe of Hargrave allowed the forward to control and move forward in one stride. Glen then bent the ball with the outside portion of his boot round and into the bottom left hand corner of the net. The power and precision being too good for the keeper on this occasion and it was game back on at 1-2.

Into the 78th minute and yet another Gary Shaw cross was flashed across the 6 yard area. Glen was agonisingly close to getting his second but his outstretched foot wasn’t near enough to make contact.

With seconds remaining and 94 minutes on the clock Jarrow broke forward in numbers. Gary being played in left hand side and with Glen waiting for the cross to nod in the equiliser Gary’s cross was carried goal wards. The keeper was left stranded, anticipating the cross and as it sailed into the back of the net. The Jarra lads had completed a remarkable 3rd 2-0 to 2-2 comeback in only 4 games.

The wind had played a massive part in the way the game was played and Glen Hargrave received the Man of the Match award for his stunning goal and all round display
