Jarrow FC 1-2 Washington (12/02/2022 3pm Kick Off)
Northern League Division Two
Jarrow 1-2 Washington
12/02/2022 – 3pm Kick Off
Luke Hudson (42) | Jack Hanson (47) Jake Martindale (50)
Second bottom side Washington rocked a young Jarrow by coming from 1 nil down at half time to snatch all 3 points.
In a game of many chances, it was the visitors who started the brighter, Jarrow keeper Steve Hubery racing off his line to block a one-on-one effort early on.
On 10 minutes however the ever-willing Luke Hudson turned his full back inside and out before squaring to Channon whose shot went agonisingly wide.
Moments later and Channon found himself in behind and with time and space could only fire straight at the Washy keeper who parried the ball out to Hudson. The awkward height of the rebound meant Luke could only fire over the bar.
With almost half an hour gone Channon had yet another chance to break the deadlock. The tall striker chased a long ball and neatly brought the ball under control before firing low wide of the left-hand post.
Washington winger Dobsinson then fired over, showing the struggling side from down the road were still a massive threat.
A splendid dinked through ball from Brian Johnson then found Gary Shaw free in the area but unusually the wingers touch let him down as the ball ran away from him and the keeper did enough to clear the ball for a corner. Channon firing a shot over the bar from the resultant corner.
On 37 minutes the brilliant Jordan Reed picked up the ball inside the Washington half and fired a strike towards goal that flashed just wide of the post. Jarrow were creating chances again but frustratingly not finishing them.
With minutes remaining of the 1st half some lovely interplay between Channon and Luke Hudson carved open the Washy defence, the latter laying the ball into the path of Shaw who struck his shot against the post and the ball was turned behind for yet another corner. More bad luck for the Blue & White army to contend with.
Gary Shaw however swung in the corner and a delicately controlled left footed volley saw Luke Hudson grab his first Jarrow goal to send the home side into the interval with a slender lead.
Into the second half and Washington fully utilised the windy conditions, something their counterparts had failed to do. A stunning long-range effort by Hanson cancelled out Hudson’s effort and just 3 minutes later the remarkable turnaround was complete with some neat passing that culminated in a tidy finish from Martindale.
The second half then almost completely died down. Jarrow devastated by the nature of the turnaround lacked confidence and struggled to play the good passing football that had brought them so many chances in the first half, save for a Gary Shaw cross that was side footed towards goal by Joe Ames on 72 minutes.
As the Jarrow fans chanted ‘We only sing when were winning’ it was becoming apparent that the game was going nowhere. The home side using the long ball into the wind tactic far too much, and obviously not getting through.
The game was almost put to bed but a fine save from point blank range by Steve Hubery that denied Washington a 3rd goal.
Substitute Wilkinson thought he’d won a pen late on but the decision was a corner despite it not touching the Jarrow man. A Summers header from the corner was then well saved by the Washy keeper as the game ended.
Man of the Match was Jordan Reed for a fine display and the young Jarrow side will take solace in the fact that they created so many chances first half.
