Durham City 0-4 Jarrow (20/02/2022 – 7.30pm Kick Off)
Northern League Division Two
Durham City 0-4 Jarrow
20/02/2022 – 7.30pm Kick Off
No Scorer | Shaw (2, 31) Mulvain
(15) Reed (90)
The game that had
lingered since about mid September was finally played on a bitterly cold March
evening at Willington.
Jarrow got
themselves underway quickly when a Gary Shaw corner dipped over the head of the
keeper and nestled itself in the back of the net after just two minutes.
The second came
curtesy of another Shaw assist this time as his cross wasn’t dealt with by the
keeper and Liam Mulvain was on hand to tap in the ball for his first Jarrow
goal.
Jarrow were then relentless
in their pressure after the second goal. A series of efforts on goal followed,
one of which rattled the post before a lovely ball over the top by Brian
Johnson split the defence open and Channon was able to deftly nod the ball into
the path of Shaw who composed as ever checked back onto his left foot and
slotted the ball home into the right hand corner of the net.
After the initial
excitement of the first half an hour the game then lulled and both sets of
players dropped their intensity as the game looked pretty much over and done
with. Half time 3-0 to the visitors and very comfortable.
The second half followed
in the same vein as the first had with Jarrow pressure but there was a
noticeable drop in tempo from the Marchers. A lovely ball over the top again from
Johnson released North however and as Channon jinked his way towards goal a well-timed
challenge thwarted the 23 goal striker and another corner was awarded.
In truth however as
Jarrow pressed down the left-hand side the playing surface was a factor yet
again. A bobbly pitch wasn’t helping the lad’s control and many passes were
lost due to that. Durham too were struggling to control the football.
As Jarrow’s frustration
grew the home side grew into the game. With more meaningful possession they
were unlucky not to create better chances as most crosses they attempted were
either cut out or misdirected.
Jarrow seemed
like they had settled for 3 goals as they counteracted Durham’s possession with
more of their own, they kept the ball nicely across the midfield and defence
and allowed Gary Shaw & Cody Bell the freedom of the business end of the
pitch. Both were chasing hard and running with the ball whenever they were
played in.
Then came the
highlight of the evening. With Jordan Reed’s introduction an extra attacking
threat was on show and Into injury time Reed hassled the defender and after
picking his pocket a few feet inside the Durham half casually looked up,
steadied himself and drove a left foot shot aerially towards goal that lobbed
the keeper and nestled soundly in the bottom corner of the net after only one
bounce!
Cody Bell won the
MOTM with a display full of endeavour and drive during a fairly comfortable
match for the lads.
