Horden CW 4-2 Jarrow

12/03/2022 –3pm Kick Off

Home-Jackson (1), Wright (8), Maskell (62), Ellison (90) | North (22), Summers (78)

Jarrow went in search of another away win but came unstuck against a very good Horden side. Despite the good football however it was refereeing decisions that made the headlines during this excellent football match.

Horden struck first blood in the 1st minute of the game as Home-Jackson was played in over the top and kept his cool by slotting the ball past Hubs in the Jarrow goal despite calls from defenders that he was offside.

Within a few minutes and Jarrow’s poor start was doubled. A slip from captain Wallace allowed Wright to nip in and round keeper Hubs to make it 2 after just 8 minutes. Jarrow had once again failed to start the game well and it was costing them dearly.

A Joran Reed ball over the top was then well controlled by Channon North and after rounding the keeper he managed to volley the bouncing ball into the empty net to half the deficit and bring Jarrow back into the match.

After that goal both sides started knocking the ball about confidently but interestingly both defences were now on top. Through balls and crosses being snuffed out at either end, Kris Summers in particular covering well and making important challenges.

With 10 minutes remaining of the half and Brian Johnson became the latest player to be sin binned for ‘aggressive’ behaviour towards the referee, there certainly didn’t appear to be any aggressive behaviour but Jarrow were now down to 10 for the rest of the half.

Horden stepped up the pressure and looked to use their numerical advantage but Jarrow held their line and their nerves to keep the score at 2-1 going into half time.

Into the second half and it was the away side who were doing all the forward running and in doing so having more efforts on goal. Using the hill to their advantage in the first half Horden now had to contend with defending going up.

Despite Jarrow’s pressure and possession however, they were unable to carve out any clear-cut chances and it was Horden who scored the next goal of the game. An unfortunate tumble by Naylor was seized upon by the midfielder who squared neatly for Maskell who’s initial shot was superbly saved at point blank range by Hubs, only for the same man to knock in the follow up. Cruel on Hubs and Jarrow but they wouldn’t let this latest setback disturb them.

A Danny Naylor challenge was then deemed to be a foul in the box and therefore a penalty to Horden. It looked harsh but Horden had the chance to extend their lead nonetheless. The penalty was struck well but not for the first time for the Marchers Steve Hubery flew through the air and got a great hand to it, reminiscent of his penalty heroics against Yorkshire Amateur in the FA Vase!

Just moments after the goal a Brian Johnson ball to Channon was laid back to Joe Ames who slipped Channon in beautifully only for the linesman to raise his flag, a decision that looked closer than the 1st goal in the 1st minute. Channon expertly finishing in the top corner despite the whistle blowing.

Liam Mulvain was then fouled 25 yards from goal, the striker dispatching the free kick himself and bringing a fantastic parrying stop from Horden’s keeper.

The resultant corner was swung in by Danny Naylor inch perfect onto the head of Kris Summers who was having a fine afternoon, and the centre half made no mistake with his header to bring Jarrow back into it at 3-2.

Then came the controversy. Liam Mulvain was halved in the box and as the ball ran free a shot was taken. The ref claimed he was playing advantage but the Jarrow players were incensed. Everyone including the shot taker were expecting the whistle to be blown. The ball went wide and inexplicably a goal kick given.

As Jarrow pressed forward for the equiliser late on gaps started to open up and one in particular sealed the game as Ellison was nicely found in the 18-yard box and cooly passed the ball into the back of the net, nothing Hubs could do and Horden had ended the blue and white resistance.

Man of the match was once again Lewis Leech who had a fine game in the middle of the park breaking up play and driving the team forward when he did have hold of the ball.
