Northern League Division Two
Jarrow FC 4-1 Esh Winning
19/03/2022 – 3pm Kick Off
Mulvain (50, 59) North (86) Bell (90) | McMahon (33 pen)
Jarrow got back to winning ways at home against Esh Winning on Saturday
after falling behind at half time in front of a healthy crowd at Perth Green
that included a Stag Do from Penrith!
Jarrow almost got off to a flyer when a Luke Hudson ball over the top
was controlled well by Glen Hargrave only for the forward to be pulled down as
he advanced towards goal. A free kick and a yellow card were given, the last
man debate was ringing around Perth Green.
Esh had the next chance of the game in a fairly subdued half but Steve
Hubery showed great reflexes to save low down from a point blank range.
With both sides struggling to create any clear cut chances Liam Mulvain tried
to get Jarrow going and had a few speculative efforts that went just over the
bar.
On 31 minutes however the second contentious decision emerged. Some nice
passing by the visitors resulted in the forward being able to get his cross in
from the right-hand side and the ball hit the outstretched arm of Summers as he
ran back to track him. The ref awarded the pen and apparently said at half that
it was awarded for a pullback that seemed to be non-existent at the time or on
replay. McMahon converted the pen but Steve was unlucky in goal, guessing the
correct way was just unable to keep out a great pen.
A Lewis Leech through ball to Channon was snatched at by the forward
just before half time and the keeper easily saved. The game was meandering
along with Jarrow desperate for the half time whistle to regroup.
Jarrow indeed took the 15 minute break given for half time and fully
utilised its importance. A long throw from Glen wasn’t dealt with by the
defence and Liam Mulvain cooly slotted home his 2nd Jarrow goal to
level things up.
Jarrow were by now turning the screw and a succession of corners were
threatening the Esh goal. The keeper making a miraculous save from the knee of
Channon after one of the corners had been knocked back out to Gary Shaw for
another bite at the cherry with a wicked in-swinging cross.
On the stroke of the hour mark and Gary Shaw played a deep cross to the
back post and there was that man Liam Mulvain once again on hand to apply the
finish by nodding the ball goal wards. A quick second half turn around from the
young side.
The home side were now comfortably the better side and after several pot
shots that went wide a Brian Johnson free kick was met by the leaping head of
Gary Shaw, not renowned for his head Shaw guided his header in the corner of
the goal but the post came to the rescue for Esh and the score remained 2-1.
With 5 minutes remaining Liam Mulvain turned provider and slipped North
in who looked slightly in an offside position when he received the ball. North
kept his cool however and slotted home after rounding the keeper to make the 3
points safe.
With the game gone there was still time for the most special moment of
the game as 17 year old Cody Bell grabbed his first ever goal in senior
football, after receiving the ball from yet another Gary Shaw assist Cody
tapped home, much to the delight of his manager & father Dave Bell and also
the Jarrow supporters. A lovely moment shared by everyone in the ground.
MOTM went to Channon North who put in a memorable forward display full
of quality hold up play as well as linking attacks with his midfield and showed
great composure for his goal.
