Jarrow entertained 5th placed Horden CW on a sun-drenched South Tyneside evening in search of their first win of the season at the 7th attempt.
Things got off to a terrible start for the home side who had shipped 4
at home by half time the previous Saturday when after some nice forward play by
Jarrow a long punt forward was missed by the keeper and Wright nipped in. The
Horden man controlled well and tapped the ball home for 0-1.
Jarrow responded well to losing the goal however and Harry Simpson at
full back won the ball in the middle of the park and fed Wilkinson who began a
mazy run toward goal culminating in an accurate left footed shot that found the
inside of the far post before the ball nestled in the back of the net. 1-1.
A tackle from behind about 28 yards out then gave Horden the opportunity
to load the box. The ball was ever so slightly left of centre but looked too
far out for a shot. Hotchkiss stepped up and sweetly connected right footed
with the ball that was hit with pace and power. The ball sailed into the left
corner of the Jarrow net to make it 1-2 to the visitors.
35 minutes gone and Jarrow appealed for a penalty that was not given. As
Callum Smith drove into the box to get on the end of a Wilkinson cross, he was
pushed in the back and missed the ball. Nothing doing from the officials
however.
5 minutes and it was another goal. From their 2nd corner of
the game Skidmore hooked the ball goalward from about 8 yards and neither
defender nor keeper dealt with the looping ball and it lobbed them both. An
unfortunate way to fall further behind for a side already low on confidence.
1-3.
On the stroke of half time the game was won by more sloppy defending
from Jarrow. In possession in their own half they gave the ball away and Wright
cooly slotted the ball home from all of 23 yards. 1-4 at half time yet again.
Jarrow introduced teenage striker Alex Thompson at half time and it
proved a master stroke from Scott Oliver. He made an immediate impact, sliding
a delightful ball through to Wilkinson who squared to Channon on the edge of
the 6-yard box. The keeper however did brilliantly at the feet of our tall
striker North and pushed it away from his right foot only for Thompson, who had
carried on his run intelligently to tap home his 2nd goal in as many
games. 2-4 and game back on.
Jarrow then had substitute keeper Jimmy Lone to thank for keeping them
in the game. A point blank save with his legs from the Horden denied them a 5th
and crucial goal.
Thompson was continuing to cause problems and as Channon slipped him in
right hand side his low shot was well saved by the excellent Horden keeper
Griffith.
Two consecutive corners followed and agonisingly almost saw Jarrow grab
a 3rd goal. A Callum Smith in swinging corner was met by the head of
brother Daniel who guided his header inches past the post.
Hotchkiss then forced another great save out of Lone after he again
sweetly struck a free kick from outside the box.
With time running out Joe Power sent a delicious curling ball into the
box from a left sided free kick that was powerfully met by the head of Channon
who accurately found the found the back of net to make 3-4 with a few minutes
to go!
Jarrow were unable to fashion any more chances to achieve an un likely
point and the game ended 3-4 to Horden. A second half to remember and a first
half to forget. Great to see the fight and comeback. Davey Smith was the MOTM
for a brilliant performance on the right-hand side covering so much ground
without the ball and driving the team forward with it.
