Jarrow FC 1-0 Sunderland West End (25/09/2022 7.30pm Kick Off)
Northern League Division Two
Jarrow FC 1-0 Sunderland West End
Jarrow went into this one on the back of 7 defeats in 8 games
and hadn’t won at home this season, despite that poor form the crowd at Perth
Green was once again sizable and backed their team until the end.
Typically, due to both of these sides being in the bottom
half it was a scrappy opening to the game and neither side took control until
Jarrow got into their rhythm.
The first real chance of the game after 10 minutes Boney was
played in by Dan Smith. Boney had continued his run after carrying the ball
forward from left and laying back inside to Smith but could only side foot his
shot to the keepers left and he made a comfortable save.
New signing Abu Salim was causing problems for West End with
his forward bursts and after a corner from West End Jarrow countered and
opposite side winger Bradley Tyrie fed Salim who cut back inside and fired a
shot towards goal that was deflected wide, great counter attacking football
from Jarrow.
As the game grew older the midfield battle intensified and
new signings Christian Campos-Loughlin & Alex Berhan were working their
socks off alongside Dan Smith, all three of them winning their duels and moving
the ball forward as quickly as they could.
On 30 minutes Jarrow had their breakthrough. A Davey Smith
free kick was lofted to the back post where Kris Summers rose highest and
nodded the ball back across goal into the path of Dan Smith who gratefully
accepted the gift and tapped home!
With moments of the first half remaining Jarrow should’ve
doubled their lead, Behran reversed his pass into the path of the lively Salim
on the left-hand side who cut back inside and hit a deflected shot towards
goal. The ball then found its way back to Behran who was waiting on the edge of
box he shot but it was well saved low down by the SWE keeper but he could only
parry it into the path of Channon who followed up and it looked a certain goal
but miraculously the keeper jumped back up and beat the ball away for a corner,
a cracking double save!
The score remained 1-0 at half time and in truth it wasn’t a
pulsating game. Both sides were desperate not lose which created a lot of
indecision and hard play.
Into the second and it was very much the same for long
periods of the game with neither side able to get their foot on the ball and
bring it forward with much purpose. Jarrow clearly happy with their one goal
advantage but Sunderland West End sluggish in their retort.
On 70 minutes Abu Salim received the ball after some foraging
by Campos and after turning sharply curled a side footed shot narrowly past the
far post with the keeper rooted to the spot.
Just 2 minutes later and West End
almost had an unlikely equiliser as the right winger smashed a cross across
goal, the ball had Pickering in the Jarrow goal scrambling but it evaded the
post and keepers reach much to his delight.
On 75 minutes Salim latched onto a
ball over the top from a free kick, he rounded the keeper but had to turn back
onto the pitch and could only smash his off balance shot off the woodwork,
agonisingly close to a second goal for the Blue and white army!
A succession of corners then
followed for Jarrow, the first of which was swung in by Salim and met
acrobatically by Channon and deflected behind by the defender, the follow up
corner was then headed just wide by Kris Summers, the elusive second just
wouldn’t come for Jarrow.
With 10 minutes Jarrow kept
searching for the killer goal. Campos played a delicious ball over the top for
Tyrie to chase who controlled well with his first touch and delivered a
pinpoint cross with his second. The ball was perfect for Salim who hit the volley
to the left of the keeper who pulled off another canny save. Lovely football
from the home side once again.
Man of the match was unanimously awarded
to Davey Smith who was magnificent at the back. ‘He’s won more headers than
channon North tonight’ was heard from the stands! A great win and hopefully
kick starts our season.
