Willington 0-2 Jarrow
No Scorer | Bowie 11’ & 12’
Jarrow travelled to county Durham in search of their first win of the new season at the 8th attempt of asking.
The game started well with both teams trying to get the ball down and play but the deadlock was broken when a Harry Simpson defence splitting ball over the top sent Andrew Bowie free. Bowie slid the ball left footed past the Willo keeper and Jarrow led 0-1.
Into the 12th minute and only 30 seconds later than the opening strike Joe Power squared for Bowie who was in the box again and this time turned in a simple finish to double the away sides lead. I did not even have time to tweet about the first goal!
The quickfire double stunned the hosts but to their credit after a few minutes they regained composure and had two decent efforts on goal. The first a snapshot from outside the box that went narrowly over and the 2nd a shot just wide after lovely play down there right hand side.
On 33 minutes Jarrow were awarded a free kick in a dangerous area and Brian Johnson stepped up to take it. The captain curled a delicious ball that was heading for the top left corner, only to be denied by the cross bar.
Davey Smith then linked up well with Bowie, interchanging passes and ending with a tame shot at the end, but the football was improving on a difficult pitch.
As half time approached Willington found themselves with a great chance to get back into the back with a well placed free kick. The shot came in via a left footed effort and nicely turned round the post by Sam Wilson in the Jarrow goal. The resultant corner wasn’t dealt with however and Nick Little produced a fine goal line clearance to keep the score at 0-2 at half time.
The second half was a fairly drab affair. Neither side were able to get a strangle hold of the game despite forays into both boxes. Jarrow seemed content to win a succession of corners while Willington struggled with slow build up play.
On 75 minutes came the best moment of the second period. The Willington man cut in from the right and advanced toward goal. The Jarrow defence were unable to close him down quick enough and he struck a left footed shot that bounced of the post and back into the arms of Wilson in the Jarrow goal.
A Hudson ball into the box a few minutes later was then handled by a Willo defender but missed by the ref, the ball did make its way belatedly through to Bowie but he was unable to make anything of the chance.
With a few minutes to go Bowie was tugged back by a Willo defender when in on goal, that tug allowed the defender and keeper to thwart his shot and clear the ball.
The game ended with Jarrow keeping the ball in the corner as much as they could. A great victory for the away side even if the second half did not really get going.
Man of the Match was awarded to Andrew Bowie for his two match winning goals and excellent all round performance.
