1-0 Chester Le Street Town

Jarrow recorded back-to-back
home wins for the first time this season to claim all 3 points on a frankly wet
and miserable night on South Tyneside.
It took the home side only 8
minutes to lift the gloom brought on by the weather when a Salim cross was
headed out by the Chester defence only for it to land on the boot of Dan Smith
who struck it first time into the bottom corner. Just the start that Jarrow
were looking for.
To their credit Chester Le
Street Town didn’t panic and kept trying to play their football which made for
an entertaining game all round.
After half an hour at the end
of some neat passing from the away side the forward curled a shot towards goal
but Pickering managed to dive full length and tip it superbly round the post to
keep the score at 1-0.
Just seconds later and a last
ditch diving block from Kris Summers again stopped Chester grabbing an
equiliser before half time.
The first half of mainly good
football came to an end with Jarrow leading by the odd goal. Very few clear cut
chances but plenty of good football on show from both sides.
On 62 minutes the game was
still producing good football but the chances were starting to flow more
regularly. Chester again playing some nice football and the midfielder ran from
deep, collected the ball and struck a half volley that clipped the post and out
for a goal kick. The away side having the better chances since the Jarrow goal,
but the football from both was pleasant on the eye.
With 15 minutes remaining
Jarrow broke with substitute Bowie down the right hand side. The ‘star man’
then side stepped his man and smashed his shot off the post, as he tried to
collect the ball, he fell under a challenge from the Chester defender and Salim
gathered the ball. Salim then struck his shot directly off the same post and
the ball rolled back out to Smith on the right hand side who whipped a cross on
top of the keeper. Salim rose but the keeper managed to punch it clear and the
linesman gave another offside. Huge chances for Jarrow to extend a slim and
precious lead.
A few minutes later and
Jarrow countered a Chester attack. Bowie yet again broke free down the right
hand side and smashed a shot against the stanchion from the angle. Agony for
the Jarrow faithful who were willing their side to kill the game.
In the closing stages Chester
pushed higher and quickened the pace but the Jarrow defence were resolute in their
pursuit of three points. At times we saw two men attacking the ball, such was
the desire to not lose the game. They were defending from the front and doing a
very good job of it.
Jarrow did eventually hang on
and claim a vital win in a difficult start to the season. The football played
tonight was not that of two teams in the lower bottom half of the table. A game
of many fouls but not one single bad challenge.
Man of the match was Kris
Summers who was majestic as usual at the back but notable performances from a
host of players meant that the three points belonged to Jarrow.
