 Durham Cup

19/10/2022 – 7.30pm Kick Off

Jarrow 1-1 Shotton Colliery (4-3p)

Abubaker Salim (63)| Aaron Robertson (78)

Jarrow went into this cup game on the back of 10 days without a game and in the first it showed. Shotton on the other hand went into the game having won 6-0 only 4 days earlier and looked confident throughout.

The first Jarrow chance of the game came when Davey Smith fed Liam Mulvain down the right channel, Mulvain sharply crossed low and into the 6-yard box but the ball was cleared by the Shotton defender. Unfortunately for the Yakkas however it went straight back to Mully who nodded it back into the path of Dan Smith who tried to hook a shot goalward but he felt he was pushed in the process and the ball fell to ground where the keeper collected it comfortably.

Minutes later and a deep free kick was sent over and nodded down into the Jarrow half, despite appeals for a foul on the Jarrow man Shotton carried on and fired a shot just wide of the post.

With a few minutes left on the clock of the first half Alex Berhan swung a dipping cross into the box that was cleared into Dan Smith who it hit and deflected into the path of Bradley Tyrie who fired a first shot time shot agonisingly wide of the left post.

Into the second and Jarrow tried to up the tempo almost from the kick off.

10 minutes later and Mulvain stroked a long-range free kick that smashed off the bottom right-hand post. The ball rebounded into the path of Kris Summers but the centre half couldn’t adjust his body in time and sliced the ball over the bar.

Just 3 minutes later and Jarrow almost opened the scoring again. A marauding run saw Davey Smith sprint down the right, culminating into a precision cross onto the head of Salim who knocked the ball down into the path of Dan Smith who volleyed just wide. The home side were getting closer.

On 63 minutes a defence splitting ball over the top from Luke Hudson fed Salim who controlled easily and then expertly dinked the ball over the on rushing keeper to open the scoring and grab his 2nd Jarrow goal in as many matches to make it 1-0!

Just a few minutes later and Shotton thought they had equalised. Mathew Johnson took the ball in the air and killed it dead before slotting home giving Lone no chance in goal. The Linesman however gave the offside decision which looked harsh in real time and on replay.

The disallowed goal gave the away side confidence and they started passing the ball quicker and the Jarrow defence were struggling to cope with it.

With 12 minutes remaining Shotton got their deserved equiliser from there impressive previous play. Despite a hint of offside the full back launched a ball towards the forward who nodded on and into the path of the opposite full back Robertson who snuck in behind and side footed the ball home.

With 4 minutes to go Shotton almost sneaked a winner with a hoof up field from their own box that was missed by the defence and latched onto by substitute Graham who fed fellow sub Maddison who curled a shot just wide of the post. A let off for Jarrow.

With almost no injury added on the game inevitably went to pens at the dene end of the ground. Jimmy Lone faced the first pen and guessed correctly diving low to his left and smothering the pen. Salim then scored to make it 1-0 and Jimmy Lone incredibly saved the second pen with his left foot! Bri Johnson scored to make it 2-0 and Shotton then scored their second pen for 2-1. Alex Berhan’s pen was nicely saved by Tobie James and Shotton scored again to draw level at 2-2. Luke Hudson then cooly slotted home to give Jarrow a 3-2 lead before Shotton equalised again to make it 3-3. Davey Smith then stepped up to take the 10th pen and under immense pressure stroked the ball top right to send Jarrow into the next round where they meet South Tyne neighbours Hebburn Town!

Fittingly Man of the match Davey Smith scored the winning penalty and had a fine game throughout.
