Uni 2-1 Jarrow

On a fine October day Jarrow
travelled to Prudhoe to face Newcastle Uni and ultimately fell short again as
they look to kick start their difficult start to the season.
A scrappy opening to the game
saw both defences very much on top with little or no goal mouth action until 10
minutes in when the Uni winger hit a speculative drive that Pickering did well
to guide round the post for a corner.
After 17 minutes Salim had
Jarrow’s first shot on goal when he cleverly beat his man and hit a left foot
shot that the keeper managed to palm away to safety.
With 22 gone Uni should’ve
opened the scoring. Some nice passing saw the Uni forward find himself one on
one with Pickering. The shot looked good but Pickering somehow managed to throw
out a right hand and stop the shot dead. Great goalkeeping to keep the score
level.
Jarrow didn’t heed the
warning of that chance however and then gifted Uni the opening goal. The
midfielder was afforded too much space and ran through the heart of the Jarrow
team before slotting the ball through to unmarked Tom Romano who made no
mistake with his finish leaving Pickering no chance in goal.
With 3 minutes remaining of
the half Channon turned sharply and struck a shot across the keeper but he
managed to palm it away and into the path of Liam Mulvain who acrobatically
tried to volley the ball towards goal but that shot was blocked and it ran to
Nick Little on the edge of the box who side footed a shot again towards goal
and this time the ball was brilliantly deflected over the bar by Uni. 1-0 at
half time but it was very close to being all square.
Into the second half and
Jarrow almost had a fortunate equiliser as the defender cleared the ball
directly onto the on coming Channon North who stuck out a foot and the ball
rolled just wide of the left post.
Uni then scored the killer
goal after an hours play when substitute Osiyemi scored. The tall striker would
later be lucky to stay on the pitch after elbowing Liam Mulvain in the face.
Just 3 minutes later however
Jarrow reduced the deficit when Davey Smith who had been doing great things
down the right-hand side sent his full back the wrong way and crossed perfectly
into the middle where brother Callum was waiting to rise and nod the ball home.
In the closing stages of the
game Uni almost scored a third that would’ve been harsh on Jarrow but Pickering
once again got down well and parried the ball to safety from a point-blank
range shot.
Despite plenty of possession
and a succession of corners after the goal Jarrow were unable to fashion
anything clear cut and credit to the Uni who defended very well to limit the
away sides forays into the box.
Evan Whittle was named Man of
the match for an excellent display in the middle of park. Evan particularly
impressed in the second with a battling performance. Next up 2 crucial home
games.
