Jarrow 2-1 Prudhoe YC Seniors (3pm Kick Off 03/12/22)
Northern League Division Two
Jarrow 2-1 Prudhoe YC Seniors
Mulvain (8), Bone (16) | Scott
(10)
A decent crowd endured biting
winter wind and rain to see Jarrow climb another place in Division 2 to 15th
and record 3 wins on the bounce.
Jarrow settled into their
work quickly and despite the recent rain the pitch was holding up remarkably well.
Some nice one touch passing from Berhan, Mulvain & Whittle in the middle of
the park allowed Salim space to run into and was found well by Hudson but on
this occasion however top goal scorer Salim was unable to keep his right foot
effort down but the warning signs were there.
Salim then cut in from the
left this time and fed James Talbot whose shot was tipped round the post for a
corner. The corner was swung in by Salim but cleared only as far as Alex Berhan
who laid the back straight back off to Salim who drove at the defence in almost
exactly the same way as he had 7 days ago and the outcome proved to be identical
also. A clumsy challenge on the Jarrow forward saw the ref point to the spot.
This time however penalty duties were passed onto Mully who rolled the ball
past the Prudhoe keeper. 1-0
Just 2 minutes later despite Jarrow
being on the front foot Prudhoe broke forward and a slight slip from full back
Alex Bone allowed the ball to run free down the right hand side and Matt Law
sprinted past him and latched onto it. Law then cooly squared the ball to the
back post where Josh Scott was waiting to turn the ball into the back of the net
for a well worked equiliser. 1-1.
Despite that set back the
lads continued to try and control the ball and when Nick Little won a header on
half way that kick started a great team 12 pass goal. There was one touch
passing across the back line and when Salim dropped deep to collect the ball it
opened the pitch up and allowed space in behind to appear. Abu played 3 separate
triangles with Summers, Talbot and then Mully before Mully’s ball in was
finished well by Alex Bone for his first goal of the season and first ever in
the Northern League! 2-1 with only 16 minutes on the clock.
Prudhoe then upped their own
tempo and saw a lot of more the ball with Matt Law heavily involved, nice
trickery down the right saw Picks collect a whipping low cross.
Jarrow however weathered that
storm and got their foot back on the ball, realising the importance of a third
goal against a dangerous opponent. Whittle’s driving midfield runs particularly
difficult to defend.
With 10 minutes to go of the
half Thomas White in the Prudhoe goal made a good low save from Alex Berhan and
then followed it up with an impressive block from Salim’s follow up, made more
impressive due to an injury and clear discomfort throughout the half.
As half time approached the ice-cold
winterly showers began and Jarrow pushed forward with a jinky Salim run winning
a corner after his shot was deflected wide. The 4th corner of the
half for the home side.
A big moment in Jarrow’s
season then occurred before half. Goal sorer Liam Mulvain who had played his
part in the recent up turn in results slid on the right and immediately pulled
up, later citing a hamstring issue that will keep the direct striker out of the
game for at least a few weeks. New signing Kobe Bewicke however came sprinting
onto the pitch to replace Mully wanting to show why he should be starting.
Trae Rowlandson then turned
provider for Prudoe with a great ball from the right along the six yard line
but unfortunately for the visitors no one was there for Prudhoe in an almost
identical position from where they had already equilised once before!
Prudhoe started the second
half a lot quicker than they had the first and kept using their wingers to good
effect with further forays into the Jarrow half but ultimately unable to play
the killer ball. Jarrow meanwhile were breaking with purpose but also unable to
forge any solid chances early on.
With an hour gone Prudhoe
were now camped in the Jarrow half and a wicked dipping left footed effort almost
caught Picks unaware in a crowded penalty area but the away side watched on as
the ball agonisingly sailed over the bar.
With so much pressure on the
Jarrow goal and the defenders literally putting their bodies on the line with
Hubbard & Summers holding firm at the back Salim & Bewicke were proving
more than willing outlet balls down the channels and thus relieving the strain.
With 75 minutes gone the game
was almost put to bed. A curling Nick Little cross who had been marauding
forward all game to good effect found teenage striker Bewicke who connected
well with the volley but the ball rose too sharply and over the bar.
With 8 minutes remaining Prudhoe
created their best move of the game with similar good football to Jarrow’s
second. The chance actually came after good forward play from Salim down the
Jarrow left but after the ball was cleared it was then worked well down the
left and ended up with another ball that flashed across the six yard box.
Jarrow managed to see the
game out and record another victory in a remarkable run of form. Myles Hubbard
was named Man of the match on his return to the starting eleven for a
commanding performance at the back in what an extremely good team performance where
they demonstrated quality in every area of the pitch and in every facet of the
game. Well played to our opponents also who contributed to a very good game.
