On a bitterly cold South Tyneside Winters afternoon Jarrow got back to winning ways and lifted themselves up into 14th place in the league on goal difference.

After only a few minutes on the clock Jarrow almost made a dream start when they won a corner after some nice play from Nick Little found Luke Hudson in the area. Abu took the corner and it was recycled back to him on the right wing. Abu managed to swing his cross in and Kris Summers controlled it and Liam Mulvain fired over from close range.

It was then Billingham’s turn to attack with a succession of corners but Jarrow held firm and thwarted any danger from the 5th placed visitors.

On 20 minutes Billingham thought they had broken the deadlock when a slid finish somehow deflected wide for a corner.

Just 2 minutes later and Luke Hudson swung in a pinpoint cross to the back post from deep on the left that found Mully in acres of space. Mully having to stretch volleyed towards goal and the Town keeper managed to save low to his right. As Mully followed up the ball struck his arm but was then fouled as he tried to retrieve the situation. Probably justified not giving a pen as the handball was obvious.

With 33 minutes gone Mully played a straight ball that split the defence and Abu ran onto it towards goal. As he was about to unleash however the Billingham Town defender made a fantastic recovering tackle and forced the Jarrow man wide and was able to quell the attack.

On 35 minutes James Talbot rolled the ball out wide for Nick Little to gallop onto. Little playing at full back controlled with his first touch and swung over a cross with his second. The Billingham defender cut out the initial cross but the ball was then seized upon by the ever-willing Evan Whittle who immediately advanced past the defender and slotted the ball past the keeper who had no chance in the visitor’s goal. 1-0 Jarrow.

On the stroke of half time James Talbot was again involved, launching a ball forward for Liam Mulvain to chase. The defender thought his keeper was playing a higher line and nodded the ball backwards towards him. The keeper advanced and tried to regain possession but Mully nipped in and rounded the keeper before cooly side footing the ball into the back of the virtually empty net. 2-0 at half time.

Within 3 minutes of the restart and Jarrow were 3 in front. Luke Hudson squared from the left and top goal scorer Abu Salim arrowed his 9th goal in all competitions into the top left corner of the net.

After that Jarrow goal the visitors started to have much more of the ball and only 12 minutes later, on the hour mark centre half Paul Braithwaite steadied himself and unleashed a rasping drive that moved in the air and almost burst the net leaving Picks with no chance due to the power of the strike.

6 minutes later and it was very much game on. Bird finished off a good move by the visitors to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

As often happens in these sort of pulsating games you are most vulnerable when you have just scored. Luke Hudson won the ball well in midfield and released James Talbot who still had plenty to do, smashed another ball goalward that sealed the victory, and leaving the keeper with no chance.

Despite plenty possession and several corners, the away side didn’t manage to get a goal to set up a grandstand finish. Jarrow manged the game well and thoroughly deserved the 3 points against another top side.

Abu Salim won the MOTM for a brilliant performance, defending from the front for the team and scoring a quite superb goal just after half time.
