On a
cold but pleasant afternoon in County Durham Jarrow used their powers of
bouncebackability to produce another fine away display and take all 3 points
from a top Brandon side.
The
game started slowly with the away side settling the quickest but when Brandon
took over control the visitors had Curtis Richardson to thank for keeping the
scores level. A wicked inswinging cross was met by the diving head of former
Jarrow man Kobe Bewicke and Curtis managed to acrobatically tip the ball over
the bar.
On 23
minutes and Richardson was at it again. A corner swung in and powerfully met by
the head of a Brandon player was once again tipped majestically over the bar by
the Jarrow stopper.
Just
over 10 minutes later and Brandon were within a whisker of taking the lead when
the ball fell kindly to the pacey number 11 Lake whose snap shot from the angle
of the 18 yard box flew agonisingly wide of the far post.
Into
the second half and within minutes of the restart Jarrow made there intentions
abundantly clear as Nick Little rolled the ball into the path of Mully who upon
taking a good first touch unleashed a piledriver that stung the finger tips of
Skelton in the Brandon goal. The resultant corner was swung in by top goal
scorer Abu and although partially cleared it fell nicely to Alex Berhan who hit
the ball on the half volley. Thankfully for the travelling blue and white army
the shot missed a host of bodies on its way into the back of the net. Delight
for Alex scoring his first goal for Jarrow in 16 appearances.
Just
5 minutes later a Myles Hubbard ball forward was controlled by Mully and the
tall striker hooked a pass over his shoulder for strike partner Abu to chase.
Abu brought the ball under control and after out muscling the defender slotted
the ball cooly into the back of the net for his 12th goal in all
competitions.
Brandon,
who had played so well in the first period now found themselves two nil down
and struggling to get possession of the football as Jarrow poured forward and
tried to kill the game.
After
a Mully free kick was then blocked as far as Abu, the forward waited for the
defender to approach him and he shifted it cleverly onto his left foot and
drove goal wards, a poked effort at goal was then brilliantly turned over by
Skelton in goal to keep the score at 0-2.
With
15 minutes remaining Jarrow did score a third and ultimately the killer goal in
this game. Abu chased another ball and again drove towards goal, this time the
lively forward tried to round the keeper but Skelton did brilliantly and got a
hand to the ball to take it away from Abu. Unluckily for Skelton however the
ball rolled kindly for Evan Whittle who capped a fine performance with a
well-executed drive into the roof of the net to give the visitors an
unassailable three goal advantage.
Jarrow
managed the game brilliantly from that moment on and there were no further
alarms despite a few shots that sailed over Curtis’s bar. Jarrow did keep
probing but didn’t add to their tally. On a day when literally anyone could’ve
won the Man of the Match award it finally went to Evan Whittle for the 2nd
game in a row for another powerful and skilful midfield performance.
