Washington 3-4 Jarrow (3pm kick off 28.01.23)
Northern League Division Two
28/01/2023 – 3.15pm Kick Off
Washington 3-4 Jarrow
Rounsfell (44, 77) Hughes (65)| Mulvain (20), Summers (25), Salim (41, 88)
After slight delay in the kick off time due to a problem with the pitch Jarrow recorded their 6thvictory in 11 games in front a vocal away following who kept singing despite a temporary come back from the home side.
When play did eventually get underway the early exchanges in this one wasn’t exactly setting the game up to be the classic that it wouldultimately turn out to be with neither side able to assert any sort of dominance with the ball.
Rather inevitably it was the current hot partnership that broke the deadlock. Abu the provider this time who slid in Liam Mulvain who cooly found the bottom left corner of the net. 0-1.
Just 5 minutes later and Jarrow’s top goal scorer was at it again with the assists. He cleverly got round the defender and drew the foul on the edge of the box. Abu then swung in an inviting free kickthat met some part of Kris Summers body and flew into the back of the net! 0-2
With a few minutes remaining of the half and Evan Whittle got in on the assist act releasing Abu down the left who immediately took on his man and after outmuscling the defender poked a right foot shot past the keeper to give the blue and white army dressed in yellow a three goal lead!
Then came the move of the half so far. A Nick Little ball into the feet of Mully was controlledwell and he sent Luke Duffy out wide who first time swung in a deliciously whipped cross towards Mully who glanced his header towards goal but the quite brilliant Alex Lawrence in goal acrobatically tipped the ball over the bar to deny Mully what would’ve been a superb headed goal.
With a minute of the first half remaining Rounsfell broke the offside trap and bore down on goal. With only Picks to beat the Washy man cooly side footed the ball home to give the home side belief going into half time. 1-3 at the break.
A few minutes into the second half and another Abu trademark run brought another penalty as he cut across the defender who carelessly brought him down. Liam Stepped up to take the pen and struck it really well but miraculously Washy keeper Lawrence stuck out a fantastic right hand over the top and palmed it wide. A quite brilliant to save keep the score at 1-3.
On 65 minutes Washington made the game very interesting, spurred on by the penalty they cut through the heart of the Jarrow defence and Hughes poked home to further reduce the deficit. 2-3 and game on.
As both sides pushed for another goal it was Washy with next best chance. Number 12 driving forward and smashing a thunderous shot off the crossbar that Picks was relieved to see fall behind his goal. Warning signs for the visitors indeed.
Then came two great efforts from the Jarra lads as firstly Alex Berhan stung the palms of the keeper and the ball rolled out to Boney who also fired one straight back but yet again the Washington keeper made a great save and the ball rolled away to safety.
With 13 left on the clock the sucker punch came in the form of Rounsfell’s second goal. The ball was played forward, a suspicion of a foul on the Washy forward was waved away and the ball fell kindly to Rounsfell who still had plenty to do. Instead however he made it look easy, and placed a tremendous 20 yard shot that was so accurate it hit the inside side netting of the goal to give Picks absolutely no chance. A great finish and remarkable comeback. 3-3.
The introduction of Channon North then gave Jarrow a new dimension. On 88 minutes Luke Hudson charged forward and laid it off to the impressive Luke Duffy who cut back inside and swung over a left footed cross that Channon delicately clipped over the head of the defender. The ball landed perfectly in the path of Abu who latched onto the ball and with relative ease slotted the ball home. An incredible game won by a moment of brilliance.
Abu was named Man of the match for the second game running for two assists and two goals but there were also other notable performances from a side who have lost only once in eleven games. 18 year old Luke Duffy making a rare start played his part in a brilliant team performance.
