Jarrow 2-3 Newcastle Blue Star (29-07-2023 – 3pm Kick Off)
Northern League Division Two
29-07-2023 – 3pm Kick Off
McFarlane (3 own goal), Morrison (19)
| Lanning (9, 62), Lovett (26 own goal)
In front of a massive opening day
crowd Newcastle Blue Star twice came from behind to beat a rejuvenated Jarrow
at Perth Green on a glorious Saturday afternoon.
With no less than 8 new players
starting for the home side it was one of those new signings Joe Hunter who
almost opened the scoring after nicking the ball from the centre half but
firing his left foot shot wide.
A Daryl Donnelly foul on Abu then
gave Jarrow the chance to swing the ball in the box. Left footed Karl Morrison
swung over the free kick and unfortunately for McFarlane he could only direct
his clearing header to the far post which beat the keeper. Jarrow 1-0 up after
3 minutes.
The lead however only lasted 6
minutes in a pulsating opening half. A left foot cross was cut out but fell to
Lanning who lashed home the equaliser.
Just 10 minutes later and Morrison
played the ball over the top to Abu who tried to turn Donnelly on the edge of
the box, As Abu was about to shoot with only the keeper to beat, he was fouled.
Morrison then stepped up and side footed the free kick into the back of the net
to retake the lead.
Again, the lead didn’t last long. A
forward ball to a player coming back from an offside position wasn’t spotted by
the linesman and as the play continued another left footed cross was this time
turned into the back of his net back the unfortunate Alex Lovatt to make it
2-2.
There was a penalty shout when Karim
was bundled over in the box, but the referee didn’t seem interested, Karim was
the target of many late challenges throughout the afternoon.
Into the second half and the lively
Abu cut in from the right after beating two men but could only blast his shot
over the bar.
With half an hour to go Daryl Donnelly’s
return to Jarrow ended with a second yellow card as he fouled Karim on the right-hand
side.
Instead of grabbing the initiative
Jarrow allowed Blue Star to nip in and score the winner just 2 minutes later.
With an injury to Dan Ord the defence wasn’t fully aware, and Lanning managed
to steal in and round keeper Jak Wells.
Despite Jarrow having a lot of the
ball in the final 25 minutes they were unable to fashion any clear-cut chances.
An Owen Mitchell volley from outside the box was the closest they came to
snatching what would’ve probably been a deserved point.
A magnificent crowd for the first
game and most people left in good spirits at the way that both sides had gone
about their business in an extremely good football match.
Kian Parker received the MOTM for a
tireless performance in midfield.
