Jarrow (3) 2-2 (2) Seaham
FA VASE 2nd Qualifying Round
21st September 2024
The first chance came when Mo chased down a ball that made its way back to the keeper but he managed to get a toe on it that went across goal, Johnston just unable to knock it in at the back post.
On 15 minutes Seaham forced 3 successive corners with 2 defected shots going narrowly wide before Jarrow cleared the danger.
Seaham then tested Jak in goal but yet again their shot was deflected behind, this time from a beautifully curled right footed free kick by James Robinson.
A Karl long throw was then nodded goal wards by Ions on 28 minutes, but the scrambling back keeper managed to comfortably claim the ball.
Just a minute later and a wicked in swinging cross was met by Rutherford at the back post but his header bounced harmlessly wide.
On 34 minutes Ions won a free kick mid way into the Seaham half. Karl chip curled the ball to the right angle of the post where Mo was ready and waiting to lunge forward and poke the ball home!
As ‘Mo, Mo, Mo, how do you like it how do like it’ rang round Perth Green Seaham got on with the game quicker than their hosts and an incisive forward run from the centre half Burton, fed Robinson who slid the ball in for Harvey Fletcher who delicately lifted the ball over the advancing Jak Wells. 1-1 in the space of 60 seconds!
A few minutes later and the away side should have taken the lead. Annang-Colquhoun was found in the middle of the box, but Jak Wells did what he does best and thwarted the tricky winger from a one on one! Seaham were on top going into the half time break.
On 42 minutes a Mo shot was partially blocked into the path of Ryan Hardie who stung the palms of the keeper, the ball then fell straight to Ions who powerfully headed the ball back towards goal, but the impressive Jennison beat the ball away from the Seaham goal once again.
Into the second half and it was the away side who started the brighter, Annang-Colquhoun stinging the palms of Wells in goal.
Despite having plenty of the ball in the opening exchanges of the 2nd period Jarrow were struggling to make it stick up front and almost directly from a goal kick played to the full back Seaham broke with purpose. The ball in was initially cleared but Thomas Lawson blasted the ball goal ward, Josh Willis blocking with what looked like his face. The ball however fell back to Lawson who struck a sweet low drive into the far corner of the net to give the Division 1 side the lead.
With the game being played almost exclusively in the middle of the park Malia introduced some fresh blood to game. Fin Day & Evann Jardine were joined by Elliot McClen & Simon Farrier giving the lads a much needed impetus boost for the remaining 20 minutes.
With 10 minutes to go a Karl free kick fell to Evan Whittle whose left volley towards goal was headed on narrowly wide by Luke Hudson. The closest Jarrow had come to scoring in the 2nd half, but the home side were still looking dangerous.
On 90 minutes Evan Whittle jinked his way past 3 players and found Farrier in space whose shot was deflected wide for a corner. The corner was swung in dangerously, but the Seaham keeper once again did well to punch clear only as far as Jardine who swung the ball back into the mixer but again Jennison did well and this time clung on to the ball.
With minutes remaining Tom Ions saw a volley narrowly sail over the bar.
Then with 92 minutes on the clock came the moment. The impressive Whittle found the calm McClen in space wide left, McClen cleverly moved the ball infield to Jardine who didn’t dwell on the ball and played it forward to Ions who swivelled to adjust his body position in order to lob forward a deliciously teasing ball. The defender turned his back on the awkward forward ball and it dropped kindly on the edge of the 6 yard box to super sub Farrier who lashed the ball home from close range to set up a penalty show down at Perth green! 2-2!
Into the penalty shootout and Seaham hit the post with their 1st. Tom Ions scored for Jarrow. Seaham scored their 2nd. Karim saw his pen saved. Seaham scored their 3rd. Farrier scored his own for Jarrow nicely in the bottom left. Jak wells then saved well to his left. Jardine then hit the same corner as Farrier to make it 3-2. Jak then completed the turnaround by saving the final penalty with his legs!
MOTM was Jak Wells for an outstanding performance during the game and a match winning performance in the penalty shootout!
