Grangetown Boys Club 0-3 Jarrow FC

09-11-2024– 3pm Kick Off

McBryde (21, 42), Collins (65)

It was a cagey opening to the match between newly promoted Grangetown Boys Club & Jarrow on a pleasantly mild early November afternoon, set against a picturesque back drop of the Eston Hills lying calmly to the south of the B & W Lifting Stadium.

The game early on was littered with niggly fouls and free kicks, Grangetown’s number 7 playing the part of pantomime villain extremely well throughout, but it was another Jarrow corner from Levi Collins that brought the game to life.

On 21 minutes Collins floated an away swinger into the box. The ball dropped to the back post where Johnny Bainbridge was able to dink it back across to the back post where Jack Armstrong was waiting to plant a header back the other way, the pinball machine was then ended by Liam McBryde who bicycle kicked the ball home from close range to make it 1-0 to the visitors!

After the goal Jarrow were able to break with much more purpose as they looked to control the ball. Jack Armstrong particularly did well in wide areas and looked a constant threat driving at the left full back.

A quick throw was taken by Armstong into the path of Karim who delicately nodded the ball into the path of Collins who fired a low shot just wide of the post as Jarrow continued to threaten the Boysie goal.

The rest of the half was taken up with near misses and half chances. A few quality crosses from the right went begging until a Bainbridge diagonal found Collins down the left-hand side. Levi managed to beat his man and swing over a quite brilliant cross for McBryde who nodded home his 2nd of the game to give the Blue & Whites a 2-goal advantage.

Just a minute later and Boysie had their best effort of the game as Liam Blair did well to get down low to his right and save nicely from a snapshot outside the box.

The home side were having their best spell of the game and with the referee eagerly giving free kicks they almost took him up on his offer to score, rattling the cross bar from 20 yards out, the 2-goal lead was starting to look fragile.

Despite this good spell it was Jarrow who almost extended their lead just before half time when a McBryde flick on found Armstrong down the right once again. Jack managed to get his head up and pull the ball back to Johnston whose shot was well saved by the legs of the keeper.

Into the second half and chances were becoming even more difficult to come by.

Just after the hour mark Kian Parker was introduced into the action replacing Two goal Liam McBryde and within a few minutes of coming on made the impact the second half was crying out for. The hard-working midfielder produced a moment of quality to feed the impressive Jack Armstrong down the right wing. Armstrong managed to feed Collins who shifted the ball onto his left and drilled a low shot past the keeper to make it 3-0.

The home side seemed to gain confidence from the third goal and stepped up the tempo, Jarrow had to rely on fast breaks.

Soon after one of those fast breaks led to Levi squaring to Evan Whittle who fired a great strike just over the bar. Kian Parker then stung the palms of the keeper with a low drive as the away side looked for more goals late on, Lutfur Karim did the same moments later.

Just a minute later and Boysie created their best chance of the game. A defence splitting ball sent the lively Dylan Gnaglo racing through with just Blair to beat in the Jarrow goal. Liam stood firm however and saved well but the ball bounced over him and Gnaglo had another bite at the cherry from on the ground, Bainbridge this time blocking the shot and Hudson clearing the danger.

Then in the 86th minute the home sides persistence looked to have paid off. Hudson appeared to win the ball but also upended Gnaglo and after waiting for his assistant to make the decision the referee pointed to the spot. The resulting penalty was then flashed wide by substitute Larkin.

That was how the game ended and another massive three points on the road. Jack Armstrong deservedly picking up the MOTM award for 2 assists and a fine game going forward & defensively.
