Northern League Friendly 25/08/2020 –7pm Kick Off Seaham Red Star 5-4 Jarrow FC 24’ Johnson, 40’67’Blackburn, 68’ Sullivan, 90’ Gardiner |  4’ Kirkham, 60’ 61’ Hargrave,   83’ Lennox      Tuesday night once again saw Jarrow pit their wits against a Division One side and after all the rain that we had during the day it was a miracle that the pitch was even playable but thanks to the home side by kick off time it was ready and looking good for an entertaining game. If Jarrow had been guilty of starting slowly in their previous friendlies against division one teams then tonight, they would break that mould. In the 4 th minute a perfect in swinging corner from Josh Elcoate was glanced towards the back post by the precise movement of Max Kirkham and the ball found its way into the back of the net. Kirkham playing a more advanced role tonight and thriving on it. Jarrow were able to knock the ball around easier than Saturday and thanks to a fairly high press stopped much of w

Northern League Friendly 22/08/2020 –3pm Kick Off Hebburn Town 4-1 Jarrow FC 32’ (P) Armstrong, 40’ Spence, 46’ Taylor, 47’ Scott | 65’ Lennox   In what proved to the be the first match since the country was locked down in March to have supporters through the gate, those supporters were treat to a very entertaining game. To start with Jarrow changed their system and employed a 451 formation with Adam Lennox up front. Initially Jarrow kept possession well and moved forward when they could. When they did get forward however they were thwarted by Hebburn’s defence or at times the keeper who read the game really well. After the early stages of both teams having plenty of the ball Hebburn began to assert their dominance and they started press Jarrow into playing deeper thus isolating their lone striker. Hebburn grew stronger as the half went on and had a number of efforts on goal that eventually led to prolific striker Armstrong contentiously being brought down by Daryl Donnel

By kick off the clouds had gathered and there was a darkness that suggested imminent rain. Thankfully that promised rain held off until the second half and after a really good open first few minutes Jarrow saw an Adam Lennox chip over the keeper chalked off for offside after just 7 minutes. There was further nice football from the home that resulted in Kris Allen’s through ball after nice play from Kai Elliot being flashed wide by the inform Lennox. For all Jarrow’s possession in the first 10 minutes South Shields U19’s kept trying their play own brand of stylish passing football and after a neat passage of play they finally broke the deadlock after a low cross

The game with a great intensity as Jarrow attempted to get the ball into the box from Nick Little cross Whitley Bay countered and as Shanks carried the ball down the left wing Jarrow players stood off him and his first time shot having cut back in flew past Jak Wells into the top corner of the net. Despite the early set back Jarrow continued to look to keep good possession but each attack was thwarted by some defensive work and a high press from the visitors that showed their quality without the ball. Whitley continued to threaten the Jarrow goal every time Jarrow lost the ball as the pace didn’t look like dropping. It wasn’t until the 12 th minute when Jarrow finally got an

Historical Look back – 1898-99 Season   We start our Historical look back series with a season to remember as we delve into one of the most exciting years in Jarrow history. In 1899 Jarrow were plying their trade In the Northern Alliance league with the likes of South Shields and Academy sides from both Newcastle United & Sunderland both whom had main teams in the English First Division (the Premier League of the day). It was Jarrow’s fifth consecutive year in the Northern Alliance and they were aiming to get their highest ever league position having finished runners up to Newcastle United A the season before in 1898. The winning margin for Newcastle that year was by 10 clear points so Jarrow knew they had tighten up and turn the 6 defeats they had suffered into wins or draws if they stood a chance of lifting the trophy. Remarkably Jarrow managed to match Newcastle’s goal tally from the previous season scoring 73 goals and only conceding one more than the current champion

This was Jarrow’s first pre-season friendly. Into the action and after 8 minutes the Shields forward Callum Smith nipped the ball away from Jarrow defender Nick Little who brought him down in the area. Smith then fired the subsequent spot kick over the bar.
